Passlock-No Start-Ignition Switch Replacement
Okay, I have to fix this for my wife. She has been stuck in her truck several times in the last month or so. This morning she could not leave to go to work. I have read where several people have replaced the ignition switch but have never seen where anyone said this was a definite fix or not.
Has anyone swapped the ignition switch out and had it be the fix? Where did you wind up getting the switch from. |
Just take it in and have it fixed. The shotgun method of throwing parts at it until one fixes something usually just costs more.
|
Why would I pay someone $80-$90 an hour to do the job when I am perfectly capable of doing it myself. Thanks for your help anyway.
|
Obviously you CAN"T do it yourself or you wouldn't be asking what is wrong with it in the first place. Pay someone to diagnose it, then replace the part(s yourself.
|
The sticking ignition key issue seems to be pretty common to GM cars lately. I have heard of folks getting a quick fix by using dry lubricant in the ignition. I'm not sure if it has to be done before the sticking starts (and locks up for good) or if anytime is better than none. Try it and let us know, otherwise it's probably going to be a new ignition switch.
|
rsc, thanks for your reply. The problem with her truck is the no start issue with the security. She can turn the key and remove the key, just will not start once in most inopportune time. She can wait 10 minutes and it will start.

Anyone else?

Suffering from the same $hit.... seems GM has a bug with this. I was at the PO the other day and a guy in a Colorado had the same problem..... I love my hummer but this crap is getting OLD!
I dont know if I should get a new key cut as I have seen this might help if it is a wore out key (5 year old key.... good chance of it) or just go buy a new sensor and put it in..... Shane |
Shane,
She has used both keys and has been stuck where the car would not start. I have cleaned the keys hoping to cure the passlock problem. She has gotten to the point where she turns the key on, puts her seat belt on and then turns the key to start. Eddie |

I read in the manual that is what activates the passlock system in the first place. Not sure if unlocking the door with the remote does the same or not.... tempted to take the remote off and see if it happens again..... Good luck... I know how aggravating this is..... Shane |
The last time it happened to my wife the truck had been parked in the garage over night and it had not been locked. She just walked out and jumped in turned the key and no start. Wait ten minutes, and it started right up and she was on her way.

After living with this problem for months I finally got tired of this happening at the worst possible time. Rather than dealing with GM and paying an arm and a leg to get this fixed, and knowing I would probably be dealing with it again in the future if I went that route, I installed a passlock bypass kit. Here is the cheapest passlock bypass kit I have found:
Amazon.com: Crimestopper PASSLOCK-SL-H3 Passlock Data Bypass Kit for Hummer H3: Automotive Hope that helps. Shane |
yup, mine did same thing, but was under warranty.....dealer replaced passlock/ignition switch.....not sure if they have to re flash anything in computer after.......passlock disables fuel injectors so it will just crank away......i mighta had 40,000 miles on it

Ignition?Pass Lock
Had the same problem as everyone here. Called GM 1-800 # that was a Joke I had a new key made at Wal-Mart when I bought the truck last year started using the new Key I had made for Less than 2 dollars problem solved. Been over a month since had any issues, none with the new key.;)
|
The fix is simple
I replaced mine at 28,000 miles .in 2011.
Take your Hummer H3 , drive it to the dealer , (wait the 10 minutes until the passlock is reset by itself) in case in doesn't start , Buy an ignition switch , just the plastic cylinder , but they might sell you the whole thing , the metal ignition switch housing too. Or Have it replace yourself and You MUST tow it to the dealer for passcode reset - if you have AAA. will be free . If not let the dealer replace it. Passcode reset runs about 80 dollars. or 1/2 hour labor. I would not buy any bypass electronic .. will probably give you double unnecessary headaches in the future. IMO ! This problem is very common and the fix is simple . Don't get stranded for 10 minutes ... have it done and move on. Enjoy our amazing H3's to the fullest again.,.! |
Here is a tech note for 2008-2010 H3's:
Vehicle BCM internal power fluctuation which occurs in many different circumstances negatively affects external passlock bypass reliability. When such fluctuation occurs the risks the vehicle going in tamper mode during start are high. The bypass module provides you a highly precise (±0.002v) passlock value, the module will not fluctuate when the BCM does which can result on the BCM and module not being on the same comparison scale. If such situation occur the vehicle will probably go in tamper mode. |
Not had any problems after 3 weeks..... but mine is a 06. So sounds like GM figured out a way to make the Passlock bypass not work... now if they would only acknowledge the problem and make one that was reliable!

permanent passlock bypass
Hello everyone. I was having the same problem on my vehicle. After doing the key restart for several months it finally got to where it would never start.
The dealer wanted to charge me $1000 just for the parts to fix it and to be honest I would rather set it on fire then give them another dime. I found that you can do the wire cut mehtod but this will only provide you a temporary fix. Eventually the other parts of the system will fail and you will be back to square one. I got lucky because I found this site How to disable and remove VATS, PASSKey and Passlock Security Systems in GM cars. They sell a bypass that takes passlock out of the equation forever. No more failing parts. They also sell a manual that will instruct you to build your own bypass if you are handy like that. I wasn't. They really saved me because there is no way I could afford the new parts. Good luck! |

What model and year of HUMMER do you have? All this for Only $37 (DIY) or ONLY $179 (for the "PRO" kit) Do you know a place I can get a throttle body tornado thingy and some fuel magnets too! |
Did a google search and there are a lot of threads about this GM and others. Youtube has non descript videos about this.

Permanently Disable and Remove GM Security Systems
Seriously, GM need to decide if they want to stay in the car's industry, or in the "Buyers Annoying Business". Regardless work or not in my Hummer, I am done with GM unless I am willing to buy a GM chassis and hook it to a horse so I can drive some sort of Amish GM
I will try this before dumping the Hummer How to FULLY Disable Security in GM Cars and remove GM VATS PassKey and Passlock systems :( |
Yea the passlock is a real pain in the ass. The bypass worked for about 6 months but has now started doing it again about 1 a week. SO either the bypass is going bad or this is a damn bug (or purposely put in) glitch in the computer. Do you think GM would do that to piss you off into trading it in for a new one.... surely not.
|
I don't think that GM do that intentionally, it is a poor design, lack of management add more sh... to the soup and we pay for it.
I had a 1998 Ford Expedition with the anti-theft device, in 2003 I trade it in for a F250 7.3L - at that time, the Expy had 300k miles and the anti-theft never had a single problem. The technology is there but GM is a company with many internal problems of basically lack of management. What we see is just the results of their lack of management, internal wars etc I like the Hummer but the only way in which I will be able to keep it is by deleting the entire anti-theft system from the truck because I can't afford to left the safety of my wide and daughter to the mercy of a car that at any given moment, will require a 30 minutes procedure I was thinking to run a cable to the starter's relay and put the switch in the glove compartment. When the problem happen, I think that I have ignition etc, just no crank but he annoying device may be is smart enough to be danger and can also shut down the engine |
Passlock Problems
Has anyone found the solution for the passlock no start wait ten minutes over and over agaiin PROBLEM.I took my 07 H3 to a mechanic he found in my history security system "incorrect valid" he says he could put a new ignition switch in but could not program after the install. This is one more problem since warrenty ran out in July.GM gives no help what so ever and says they have never heard of this issue???????

PCMforless.com can disable the fuel injection off feature of pass lock. Do even if the system fails you can still drive your hummer. Blinking security light goes off in 10 minutes
|
Just had dealer program new rke remote and they cannot disable the pass lock.
PCMforless.com is your best bet. |
This is what I bought (I need to change my review on amazon...):
It worked great at first then started acting up again. I figured I would need to order another one but tried: Step 1 – Attempt to start the vehicle. It will crank, but not run. The security light will be flashing on and off. Leave the key in the ‘run’ position for exactly 10 minutes, then the security light will stay solid or go off. Step 2 – Turn the key to the ‘off’ position for 10 seconds. Attempt to start the vehicle. Some vehicles will run at this point, although many will require you repeat repeat Step 1 two more times. Make sure turn the key to the ‘off’ position for 10 seconds before each 10 minute cycle. Step 3 – The vehicle is now ready to relearn the proper code. Turn the key ‘off’ for 10 seconds and then ‘crank’ the vehicle. It should be running now. The security light might stay on solid for several minutes afterwards, depending on your system. Worked like a charm. I have not had any problems since then.... You might want to give this a try before ordering a Passlock bypass to see if it helps. |
PassLock
Here's Something I found. Eric
by Dr Zach May 02, 2008 Review #: 119601 Company General Motors Product / Service PassLock II security systems Location Warner Robins, Georgia Category Auto Views 609 This letter is addressed to General Motors. Why are many of your vehicles experiencing vehicle "security light on" (random events) and "vehicle will not start" (random events)? My 2003 Impala has experienced these issues over the past 2 years. The "security light on" (who really cares) but the issue with the "vehicle not starting" is really serious. I have investigated many difficult problems in my lifetime... I like to explore things fully! I have vast experience in Electronics, Engine control management systems and Auto repair. Currently, I am working as an Embedded Software Engineer. I have fully investigated the PassLock II issues "online" and have found such a large number of complains directly relating to my complaint. What is staggering, is that many times, consumers take their vehicle to a certified GM dealership and pay for the repair (I've seen up to $450.00 posted). A day or a week later the problem comes back... Many consumers have simply defeated or by-passed the PassLock system. The information and kits are available by doing a simple search. I would like 1% of the money GM dealerships have extracted from consumers regarding this issue! Now here is some interesting news for GM and their dealerships. I have personally investigated my PassLock problem from a serious technical view point. The dash was tore apart and eventually, I was able to remove the ignition switch which has the Pass Lock (magnetic sensor system) mounted in it. The ignition switch was dissasembled and I looked closely and observed a few interesting things about the PassLock system design. 1) The male connector does not fit securely in the female connector receptacle. It can wiggle up and down and back and forth. 2) The connection is a "blind connection" meaning that during assembly one would not know if the PassLock connector was connected correctly or not. 3) The male and female pins used on the PassLock system are "Tin" plated and subject to oxidation over time. The pins should have been "gold plated." The grey oxidation was clearly visible under 10X magnification. 4) The Body Computer does not adjust over time for the oxidation that build up on the PassLock pins. The critical analog PassLock signal drifts depending on mechnical issues, temperature and humidity. Ok - GM -> The PassLock cat is out of the bag! What I did about this problem. I certainly did not take the vehicle to any GM Dealership and get "rear-ended." I simply hand soldered the three wires (Black, White and Yellow) directly to the PassLock sensor. The vehicle is repaired and I would like to let GM know that when I sell this vehicle, I will offer a "LifeTime Warranty" on the security system for this vehicle (more than you can do)! So what is GM doing? Well, the Dealerships are collecting a lot of money from us. They, the Dealershipsr are simply replacing the sensor ($150.00). Can all of these sensors be going bad? The answer is no... When the sensor is replaced the oxidation on the female connector pin is temporarily scraped and makes a better connection. Three years down the road (guaranteed!) you will be up against the same issues. So the "root cause" of this failure and GM's inability to permanently fix this problem is now understood. When consumers are installing bypass kits they are not bypassing the Body Computer or the three required signals to the Powertrain Controller (Class II serial communications, Fuel Enable and Crank Enable) they are bypassing the sensor and the connector. The problem is with the connector and its pins! OK -> GM and Dealerships wake up and return all of the money you've swindled from us! You use technology against consumers and we are sick and tired. GM, I've seen your last quarterly report and it looks like "we the consumers" in "North America" will not have to be dealing with you for very much longer. I wish you all the best of luck! Dr Zach |
I was going to do the remote starte bypass box but then decided that having the Engine PCM ignore the Passlock signal from the BCM was better. I never have to worry about the Passlock now. My engine starts every time since the PCM always has fuel injectors on and does not have to get a Passlock signal to turn them on.

I know this is an old tread but I wanted to give a little update. I replaced the battery in the hummer and the problems stopped.... for a while. However when the weather cools down it comes back.
I finally had enough and bought HPtuners and deactivated it. I licensed 2006 H3's so if anyone is in the area (Western NC) and is interested, I can deactivate the passlock for you for a small fee. |

If so, get rid of them ASAP and replace with a quality aftermarket set. |
No I changed them out a few years ago. I still see the passlock light flashing every once in a while.... At least I don't have to sitting and waiting 10 min any more. And it always seemed to do it at the absolute worst time!

Just happened to me last week - no start - wait 10min. Scary!
Would a light lube in cylinder or key help the lock cylinder, or is it just key or cylinder wear? Dry graphite? |
Passlock-No Start Ignition Found the problem to 10 minute wait
I found the problem for the delayed start on the Hummer after fixing the unneeded. :) I purchased my Hummer back in 2006 and had a remote start put on by the dealer. I've never had it upgraded or changed the solution was the remote alarm was malfunctioning causing the truck to not start at times. its been awhile since I had the new remote start I have no more problems. solution solved.:p

Hummer H3
Here we go again, update to what's going on now with my H3 2007. Shift Assembly went bad, couldn't get the key out of the ignition. dealer says the solution for this is to get a Shifter Assembly, couldn't move the gear at all key locked in ignition and gears would not shift. I waited awhile (hours) than I tried again and was able to start Hummer. Suspension Stability light came on was told I need a longitudinal excellimeter suspension, for suspension in vehicle. and last but not least my radio is shot now. The radio alone costs over 1000.00. looking at the costs still beats a payment every month for a new vehicle.

Hey guys I'm new to the forum, I guess better late than never.
My '07 H3 has the passlock / 10 minute wait problem. This problem started for me about 3 months ago. I'm the original owner and have around 90k miles on my manual trans H3. I'm going to try replacing the passlock switch at the ignition. I found this D.I.Y. video on YouTube; |
The switch is 40 bucks and takes ten minutes to swap out the back half of it. Another one of those spare parts to keep on hand.

No start/ Passcode fix
Go to auto parts store buy new ignition switch,$70.00. Go home and remove the three Torx screws located under steering wheel shroud, it is a two piece unit that snaps together. Raise and lower steering wheel as needed to remove shroud. On left side of ignition switch you will find a black plastic unit about the size of a golf ball with an electrical connector on back side (engine side) remove connector. The passcode unit is held in place by two Phillips head screws. After they are removed and after disconnecting the battery turn the ignition key to the "on" position which will enable you to remove passcode unit. Take new ignition switch an using a large screwdriver rotate the cylinder lug ( about halfway into ignition switch housing (from the side where your key cylinder would be clockwise then passcode unit will pop off of ignition switch. plug in electrical connector and install unit on existing ignition switch with the two screws. 15 minutes, tops to do this swap. Hook up battery, jump into drivers seat. Your car must learn the new passcode lock or is it the other way around. 😳 Now try to start your engine "it won't start, DO NOT TURN OFF !!!!!! wait till lock indicator on dash stops flashing " the proverbial 10 minutes " Turn key to off position for five seconds then try to start again, it won't start, leave key on once again and repete sequence. After you do things correctly it will learn new passcode and start on the fourth attempt. 😎😜😂 I did swap three weeks ago and cured the problem. Have fun in your hassle free H3

This worked guys!!! Dont buy or order anything, i tried evrything that evryone recommended & nothing worked but this!!! Couldnt beleive it! After the third try, it fired rite up, no problem
