found out I had the ground and the low beam wire flipped since March.

The new wire had a black on the edge. So I assumed Ground. Turns out ground is the middle. I have it hooked up correctly now.

Do I need to take a battery terminal off or let it reset somehow? I assume there is a protection mode?

If you still have your extra ground installed, you need to remove it. This system needs to work with a floating ground on the circuit not being used (low beam or high beam). Take a look again at the schematic, specifically on the relay I mentioned (relay 70).
