Changing the oil filter on my I-5 generates a huge mess. I can crack it open and let it drain, but then when you pull it out oil splashes front, back, and top. Is there a good way to prevent most of the mess?
I've tried drilling holes in filter cans before but the metal is pretty strong and hard to get the drill to not walk.
Poking a hole in the filter is OLD SCHOOL. There's a plate below the filter that funnels to the front, loosen filter, wait for it to stop draining. Loosen more, and slowly remove, draining into the plate. A proper drain pan will catch all, except the oil running down your hand, which in turn is a skin lubricating oil treatment. It's Important to wipe down the area or keep the drain pan in place for awhile after oil change.
I guess I'm not slow enough in pulling out the filter as I tilt it some to wiggle it out. It seems to always splash behind crossbeam and under the drip tray which is hard to clean.
