I am in the middle of doing a filter cleaning and wanted to know how much oil is optimum. Is too little bad because I know too much can kill the MAF and screw things up. I dusted the filter twice with the oil and it looks pink enough. chime in if yu know.

 

I don't know that I could explain it, without being there. But, you're better off under-oiling it, than over oiling, like you said.

 

As explained to me once..
After a good cleaning and drying...drizzle a little of the filter oil along the upper pleat edges only..it will soak into the rest of the filter slowly on it's own...DO NOT install right after oiling, let it set for an hour or two.

 

I just hope you didn't proceed to the oiling step until the filter is completely dry.

 

Dennis is exactly right... I've used K&Ns for years. Though I think I'm going to switch back on one of my cars.... Anyway... Clean it using he K&N cleaner ONLY! Let it dry completely! It MUST be totally dry so that you get the "wicking" effect when you apply the oil. When it's dry... Run the tip of the oil spout up and down the top of each pleat, allowing the red oil to get soaked up and wick into the fabric element. DO NOT go back to try to "fill in" the holes. Let it sit for an hour or two and THEN go back and add a drop or two of oil to fill in the bare (or really light) spots. If you have ANY doubt that you may have applied too much oil... wrap the whole filter with paper towels and let the paper towels wick the excess oil away. Install... Enjoy!
