Default how to fix transmission heat shield

What options do I have to prevent this crack from further propagating other than welding?

Throw it in the trash and get a replacement....?? They are less than $26 shipped to your door. Find a used one for less.

Genuine GM Automatic Transmission Heat Shield 24293211

Would learning to weld then repairing it be "other than welding" since I added the acquisition of a life skill? Anyone can weld and I think everyone should learn to do it if you work on your own stuff.

+1

That looks like an excellent piece to practice on. I'd have to check the thickness, but I don't even think I'd go to the trouble of firing up the MIG for that. I think my $20 swap meet flux core would do it far faster than I could place the order on line -- let alone waiting for it to arrive.

Besides -- Making sparks and hitting stuff with a hammer is fun! -- And I don't think anyone who owns a Hummer can (should) say that they are "above" or "past" making sparks and hitting stuff with a hammer!

Always be careful -- especially with a tool/procedure you are not familiar with.

That linked shield is not for my 4L60E ... I did a web search and can't find the part number is 15918791, and they were dirt cheap when available.
Yeah, I'd like to get a welder but not for a one-time job and for more stuff that won't fit in my garage.

IT'S ONLY A HEAT SHIELD!
Do whatever it takes to keep the shield secured in place!
BTW, I still have the original factory installed exhaust manifold heat shield that I added oversized fender washers to keep it secured in place!
