I have a 2008 H3 alpha. One afternoon out of the blue when leaving the grocery store reverse was not there. No noise, all other gears work as normal. Checked everything from codes to a full fluid flush and all was normal. Read a post on here from “tony525”. His was exactly the same including cycling the 4wd lock with engine off and back to normal. After that reverse works as normal and still does. Has only been a couple days but still fine. Hopefully someone else on here has an answer to why????

How many miles does your H3 Alpha have? You mentioned a fluid & flush, how many miles ago was that? How about the Transfer case, when was the fluid last changed there?

 

Trans is a Gm rebuild with 40k on it, vehicle has 180k. Trans gets serviced with dex 6 every 30k. TC also gets serviced with the trans at 30k. With no problem in all drive gears, especially #2 tells me the sun shell is ok yet. Might be something stuck in valve body? Not sure. Just having a hard time believing it’s in the trans with what’s going on. I spent 15 years from 1990-2005 at a GM dealership as a master tech, so have a good understanding of what all happens in the drivetrain. Just fishing to find out if there’s any other reason this may happen before I start throwing parts at it. Most of my searches and phone calls have led me nowhere. Any helpful response would be greatly appreciated.

 

And still driving it with no issues, just don’t trust it.

 

Bravo on the maintenance!! I have never ever had a 4l60e Trans go 180K miles in a 4x4 truck. Only had one 2wd bone stock shop truck make it to just over 200K.

You know the three symptoms of a failing 4l60e Trans:
1) No 3rd gear;
2) No 2nd gear or reverse; and
3) Hard 2nd gear.

I think you may be on borrowed time before a rebuild. Good luck.
