I have to replace the heater core in my 07 H3. I’ve been told both that I need to reclaim the refrigerant and disconnect the a/c to do the job and also that I can replace the heater core without disconnecting the a/c. Just trying to find out which because I don’t want to have it torn apart then find out I need it emptied with no way to drive it to a shop. Also don’t want to deal with the a/c if I don’t have to. Thanks

 

They are two completely separate entities the only way they connect is using the same air which blows across the evaporator coil is the same air that blows across the heater core.. no refrigeration exchange there

Replacing the heater core requires removing the instrument panel and that drives disconnecting the A/C. Ask me how I know.....

 

To get the heater core out, it comes out as a unit in the HVAC exchange box so there is NO way to do that job without disconnecting AC lines. If you are worried about the AC Refrigerant Police coming to see how you evacuate the refrigerant then go get it evacuated before you start your job.
