I have located a company that sells a receiver that bolts through the cut down in the rear bumper. I am only wanting to put a light weight aluminum carrier onto the receiver. Max weight is 500 pounds. This is mainly for camping.
Anyone have any ideas about the bumpers ability to handle this hitch and the weight without it breaking? I can get a full size receiver, but it is a bit of overkill right now. I cant find anywhere in the manual or online that talks about this part.

 

jfwiw,i got my hitch damaged in a rearender. got a factory assm at a junkyard for$88, cheap. gm wants apx 800.

 

Got a pic of that hitch you are talking about? I am not sure what you mean when you say bolts through the cut down? The rear bumper is sheet metal, pretty thin at that.

H3s have two different rear bumpers depending upon whether you have the factory trailer pkg (hitch and wiring to the hitch plug socket) or not. If you did not get the trailer pkg, the bottom of the bumper is straight, no cut out for the factory hitch. There are hitches made that fit both bumpers, the aftermarket hitch for the non-trailer pkg H3s just hang lower off the rear.

If it were me, I'd buy a real hitch, the frame holes are already there, that is a bolt on, but can actually be used to tow a real trailer when needed.
