disconnect the mass air flow sensor near the air filter and see if it starts. the backfire might have damaged it.
also did you ever resolve the issue with the ignition switch?

should clarify, still starts, challengingly, (even w/the air flow sensor in). I was able to get it home, but as soon as the RPMs drop, the engine stalls. I am getting P0300 check engine flashing and low oil pressure (dipstick reads full). smoke comes from dipstick tube (guessing blow by?)

ignition switch?? perhaps another poster, not my rig. I've been dogged by the rear seal leak and engine plus that transmission fuse. one of two owners in vehicle life, all family, has been maintained regularly.

is it possible, the blue devil rear sealer has stuffed up my engine? worth doing an oil change?? otherwise, I have reached my threshold for time and money on the poor fellow.

you would need to drain the oil to see if there is any metal flakes i guess. the oil pickup tube o-ring or the oil pressure bypass could have failed causing no oil pressure. if run with out pressure long enough then it might definitely need engine work.
smoking could be a sign of over heating bearings. blow by would be more of a pulsing air feel.

oil drained relatively clean, one small artifact, almost like plastic. what is more concerning is the fact only 3 qts came out.

since new oil, engine no longer stalls, though still gives a good knock (think a bit along the lines of a Diesel engine), worse on acceleration. today's plan is spark plugs.

appreciate the help...

diesel knock sound (rod knock) is most likely a bottom end issue. like a spun bearing.

Let's assume the engine needs a rebuild or replacement -- anyone want to put an honest assessment of value on it at this point? My gut is KBB minus cost to do engine. CA/NV locale.

Some noteworthy features:

Navigation, Bose Sound (OEM), Aux input added via Schwarttzy (OEM XM/Sirius still intact, audio jack is in glove), Moonroof (never once leaked), Wheel locks, New hooks for setback nets (if you owned an H3 you'll thank me), Heated front seats, BackUp Camera (OEM, built into mirror, as in the glass itself, NOT a sliding one found in earlier year end models), Locking Gas Tank, 2 remote key fobs

That thing is ugly dirty inside and out!
$4,000 to $5,500 with a blown motor and unknown transmission issues.

Perfect candidate for an L96, LS3, LSA, LS9, LSX, or my favorite LS7 SWAP!
Everything is already there! Just need the oil pan and some tuning... and some other stuff depending on the engine you choose.
