Not exactly sure what to call this, but one of my friends has one that looks like below:-


Like me it's seen better days

Does anyone know what the proper name is and if they are available? I can't seem to find anything.

Also is this typical?

Mine I had bead-blasted and powder coated as the rust was only superficial, must be the weather in UK and salt on roads.

It doesn't look like you can buy just the top bit i.e.



Is this a common issue?

I was asked if i could get one made, 10-off yes but 1-off would cost way too much..

maybe 3D print a cap cover clean up what you can and epoxy it on or maybe a few rivets on what is left. or maybe just some thin aluminum riveted on

Indeed I know someone here who's done exactly that, it kind of looked OK and worked which is the main thing ✔️

If you preserved the pivot pin and spring, the rest would not be too bad for a weld fabricator to make. Might even be able to just cut and weld on a new top and side piece....easy to cut on a bandsaw and weld at home.

I would not cover it up with plastic and leave it....now is the time to fix it. Soon it will fail on you, likely when you need it most!

Definitely cutout the rust, then spot weld type 316 sheet metal, or take it to an auto body shop for repair.
