Looks like "ATF Dexron III H Specification" is the key word, is there a particular brand though to look out for?

The lubricant market is vast, Dexron per say is a GM trade name so googling finds many hits.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for that again, indeed I have seen these amazingly long lists of ATF manufacturers, based on that it seems like any Dexron VI should work.

 

What a can of worms the subject of "changing" transmission fluid is i.e. the pro's and cons

So here's what seems to be the case:-

• Maintenance Schedule says change fluid and filter (normal service) every 60,000 miles.
• Some sources say if the fluid is reddish but not black and burnt, change as normal. If black and/or burnt changing may cause slipping, so it's better to leave as is and keep going.
• Also it's seems that flushing is not recommended, just drain and filter change.

Mine is not black or burnt and looks reddish to brownish so needs changing but at what a risk?

Nothing is ever simple or so it seems

 

The reason for monitoring fluid color is a guide for replacement of the fluid to prevent premature failure.Same with Engine, Steering, Differential, Brake,Coolant, etc... fluids. Auto repair shops I've worked at, had BG oil comparison plates & coolant brake fluid test strips, to show the customer, (pic below)! If changing your transmission fluid causes a problem? You know the transmission was soon to expire, mostly due to LACK OF MAINTENANCE! Btw, you are driving "SEVERE SERVICE". I highly recommend monitoring fluid color, and replacing fluid every 30k miles max, ALL the fluid. The 4l60/65/80 can achieve up to 400k+miles when properly maintained.

Indeed I've watched Chrisfix's video several times and looking at my transmission fluid, I'd say it's fractionally to the left of his scale, may be "old and dirty", certainly not black and burned, but needs changing.

It's difficult to judge colors from jpgs due to camera response, lighting and color grading etc, I'll have to make a judgment call.

Plan is to drain fluid, fit new filter, new fluid pan (with a drain plug and magnet) refill with Dexron VI and run for a few 100 miles then check and possibly change fluid again or flush.

I've bought a small electric pump which is amazing and quick, it will make the pan change a lot less messy ($16 eBay) even if it only works once it doesn't matter

A friend of mine changed his trans-fluid and it started slipping, hence my nervousness, but his H2's service history is unknown.

If mine starts slipping you'll hear the scream all the way from here...

 

I've corrected 99% transmissions slipping by flushing. First by adding a pre-flush cleaner, then removing/replacing all the fluid. Your fluid does look dark with a hint of pink, just add a can of trans tune to clean, then remove as much fluid as you can. Fresh clean fluid does a tranny good!

The Sea Foam product in the video looks like "Hydra Trans Tune Additive TT16" (??) hard to find this side of the pond, but I think I can get some.

Was looking at making a video of the transmission job, I can include/exclude your SeaFoam tip - what do you think?

Obviously I'm no auto-expert, just in it for fun and because Hummer service is non-existent and experts expensive and hard to find.

Even doing stuff myself has cost a small fortune, brake pads, drums, rotars, brake cables, brake lines, fuel pump, air-suspension, shocks, stabilizer links, bump-stops, tire carrier, nurf-bars, radio, A/C compressor ++, re-gassing, power-fold, mirror-glass motors, DDM, front wiper motor, blower resistor, new rims, tires, tools to name but a few items.

Nearly forgot, 3 fuel doors, serpentine belts and tensioners, new cats, MAF Sensor, tailgate struts, 2-off Tech2

Oh and there's the fuel price at $8.50 / gallon.

Must seem like I'm complaining, but the balance is the fun value - I think
