Hummer H2For those who like a little more gleam to their Hummer, the H2 offers a similar rugged look as the H1, but as a lower cost, and with more added features, making it almost a massive luxury SUV.
Hey all, so I just completed a little project to fill the ugly hole left by removing the OnStar. I reached out to Full Spectrum Plasma through Facebook, and had him mock up and cut out a plate 7-7/8” X 2-1/2”, with four rocker switch gangs and a 1.18” hole in the center. He painted the plate black and it matched the rest of the dash almost perfectly.
I filled the switch holes with some MICTUNING laser engraved rocker switches that have a blue light. I put in a voltmeter in the center and they all fit perfectly.
When I got the plate I considered gluing the plate to the back of the face plate, but didn’t want to ruin it for the future, so I decided on double sides 3M trim tape around the back side, and mounted the plate to it. It holds really well and can be removed later if need be.
The wiring took a bit of time, but works out really well. All of the lights on the bottom illuminate when the headlights are turned on, and the top lights turn on when the switches are turned on. When the headlights are off the bottom lights are off.
Let me know what you guys think and if you have any questions. Thanks for looking.
Very nice work indeed! Much better use of that space and great job sourcing the switches w/ icons for your various lights. I'd think this would be a very popular kit for many owners.
Something like this or there is a factory pocket that can go there but that is no longer available anywhere. I know - I posted about it on here and I think I got one the last ones. A few others tried and no dealer has been able to get them since. Someone else made a 3D printed pocket too which I think they are or were, selling on eBay. For such a large SUV there is a lack of storage space so I opted to put a storage pocket there.
I do like the switch panel though. Looks nicely done.
Thanks all. Yeah it came out really well. The guy who was making the 3D printed pocket stopped making them and won’t make any more. I contacted him about it and he said he isn’t doing them anymore. I like the carpet idea that people have used before, but for me the switch plate made more sense.
Putting a kit together like this would be hard at all, I think for all it was about $70 total, with the custom cut plate. And depending on the switches chosen you could see a little difference in price.
I wired them all up in a nice clean manner as well.
I know this is a old post but it is also still a problem, so maybe this will help someone.
I removed the onstar unit from the dash, unplug it from the vehicle. Taped the wires/plugs together and pushed them back into the dash.
I then remove the black face plate from the onstar unit, it just snaps on the front of the onstar unit
Next I removed the two screws that hold on the push buttons to the face plate.
I then taped the buttons back on the face plate and reinstalled it back on the dash while I think of options to reuse this face plate.
Hope this helps since the storage pocket is unavailable.
Converted the OnStar face plate to a seven (7) gang rocker switch plate. Cut out the initial area with a hack saw blade and then milled the opening to size. Looks like a lot of wiring Saturday.
