I will install a generator if my power fails for an extended period of time!
IMO, waste of money unless you need one.

You have Car Insurance...Health Insurance... Home Insurance... Life Insurance... It's for the Unexpected. The Generator is the same... Never depend on the Power even though it's underground. Someone 10 miles away hit's a Power pole and the power at your house goes off. Just one scenario. It's piece of mind. I had power fails and brown outs in my area over the years. 30 seconds later the power is back on with the Generator. It also raises value of your home,

Years ago when Hurricane Sandy hit here, the power was out for 4 days. I was the only one that had Power and Heat. Good investment in my eyes.
Here's one of the best places to buy one. I'm on their Generac Forum...They have 4K members on the forum.

I'm 20 miles from civilization, with overhead power lines. The generator probably gets used an average of 5 to 8 days a year. Runs on natural gas.

Yeah Same here. Mine runs every week for 5 min automatically to keep fresh. Has the optional oil filter heater to keep the oil warm. Generac use to have them run 20 min a week. But the newer models with Hydl lifters and redesign change that to save hours and NG.

I was living in a rural area during the Blizzard of '78.
When the power went out:
HEAT: lit up the gas range oven in the basement + the gas range in the kitchen on the main level.
Also a freestanding direct vent gas fireplace in the family room.
LIGHT AT NIGHT: Battery operated flashlights & candles.
GEAR: Multiple layers over the body to keep the heat inside.
My family of 8 + a neighbor family of 4(lived in an all electric home) stayed over until the power restored.
@12yro it was an experience I will never forget making igloos in the yard, climbing the drifts on the side of the snow plowed roads reaching the overhead power lines.
I survived
NEVER USING A GENERATOR back then! I don't need one now with the technology available 46yrs later!

I will ponder your experience this winter..... When the power goes out, my generator will kick on and supply all my power needs, keeping my gas furnace running. Although I usually prefer to throw a few logs in the wood stove, always feels so much better. We have so much excess power, we leave the string lights on the fence turned on as well, lighting up everything :-) Hot water heater and the stove are both gas. The last time it was out for 4 days, my natural gas bill only spiked $44. Well worth it....
