Hummer H2For those who like a little more gleam to their Hummer, the H2 offers a similar rugged look as the H1, but as a lower cost, and with more added features, making it almost a massive luxury SUV.
In the past I had a couple of lug-nuts work loose, perhaps I missed them, but I'm very careful so it's a mystery. Now I inspect the lug-nuts, threads and rim, then torque-up in the criss-cross pattern, and then double-check in a different order.
140 is an effort for me, as is lifting the wheels, must be an age thing....
When I hear a clunking sound inside my center caps, I figure a lug nut is loose. No worry, keep driving.
Once the clunking sound increases, and I hear what surely must now be 2 lug nuts tumbling around like marbles on a treadmill, only then do I pry that nasty center cap off the wheel and put them back.
You have 8 per wheel. You only need 4 to keep the wheel on. The others are just for show to tell people how Macho your truck is. And it is not like you are ever going offroad in your parking lot princess to need the 5th lug. Leave that to the H1.
In practice, once that corrosion sets in, that 140 turns into a seized 200 ft-lb in the blink of an eye.
And wheel locks get rounded-off and ruined.
Torquing to 110 lb is plenty in my experience. Never seen one loosen at that spec.
When I torque to 140 lb, I crack the nuts yearly to avoid seizing.
My brand new C8 Vette calls for 140 ft-lb also.
Nuts!
BS! Only torque to spec! My 3 calls for 100, yet I take them to 110-120, and they always take less torque to remove. Loose lug nuts=lose wheel!
