Hummer H2 For those who like a little more gleam to their Hummer, the H2 offers a similar rugged look as the H1, but as a lower cost, and with more added features, making it almost a massive luxury SUV.

Default H2 trans issues

Hi everyone im new to the group and not an H2 owner just yet. I've been squirrelling extra funds aside and I'm now ready to start shopping around for an H2. I've done a good bit of study on the H2 ive Googled many posts from this group. I've come across alot of posts regarding trans failure on the early models my question is what year was this corrected? Thanks

NONE. But I would not say the H2 has any more tranny failures than any other GM truck. Buy the lowest mileage, rust free H2 that you can afford. If the tranny goes out, replace it and drive another 100k

With proper maintenance 300k is doable.

As calif phil stated RUST FREE is what you want above all. Avoid any from the northeast.... Specifically Chassis Rust under the vehicle. I lived in NH at the Quebec border...you have no idea how bad they can rust and cost $$$$ to resolve all the rust related issues. Like Hummer stated - the transmissions are fine if they have been serviced and not beat on. Check the fluid/ filter and change the pan to one with a drain to make easier to change fluid out. Also do all your fluids- brake, PS, transfer case, front/rear end, engine and get a starting point of maintenance.
Check steering for play.
Check wheel bearings for play as front wheel bearings are a wear item..
If she is clean & no rust- you have a great starting point.
Good luck & post pics!

Thanks for all the info I appreciate it. I'm pretty good with my wrenches these maintenence steps are all par for the course with my previous trucks. Rust is my mortal enemy lol. So much so that in addition to a large list of maintence stuff ill do immediately after purchase I will likely POR-15 the underside rather than standard undercoating. I've used that stuff before on a lifted truck i had here in Canada. Metal will literally never rust with that stuff if applied properly. Now to find one with the right mileage that isnt rusty and crusty that I can afford.

Replaced a transfer case at 230k on my last H2- found a new GM one for $900. Looking at prices now, I wish I had bought a spare at that.
