In fact GM didn't start using AFM/DOD until the 6.2l L94 was released in other GM vehicles.

What the 08 and 09 do have VVT or variable valve timing which was actually a good thing.

I'm not sure but I do believe GM did implement AFM/DOD on the H3 Alpha 5.3, perhaps one of our resident H3 experts can confirm this.
I went thru this with my 05 H2 and ended up getting a crate 450hp 6.0 and swapping heads and cam over to work with a TBSS intake, flex fuel injectors and then I added a BT stage II low lift cam. It would smoke all 4 tires and was a beast to drive. I went this route to save time. I paid well under todays prices somehow as I think I got the long block for about $3500, swapped heads for free and had new cam degreed for free by giving the guy the factory unused cam. I was very pleased with it in the end.
