The PRNDL switch controls the ignition cylinder lock. If you are unable to remove the key, the transmission is not in park. Get down and dirty and make sure the transmission shift lever is in P(park) + check the PRNDL switch while you are down there.
do the gears match on the dash with position of the shifter? if they do not then the cable has issues or the range selector switch or it's plug / wiring is having issues
I can't get the key to come out of the ignition since this happened either.
Would love some guidance here.

when its runningrunning move shifter into gear its making a sound like it wants to go into gear, but won't. Doesn't make the sound in drive position, but does in all other gears. Kind of a ticking sound.
I've disconnected the battery overnight in hopes that it was an electronic issue that would reset, but still the same.

It's FT 4WD. Btw, you can't get it running without starting in the P(park) position. Post pictures of your instrument cluster, shifter, and transmission linkage.+codes
