Default Fuel leak around fuel pump locking ring

So I've got the dreaded smell coming from around the gas tank area.

Its hard to inspect but poking around the fuel-pump locking ring I can pick-up gasoline on my finger, not much but enough.

So 1st question, is this likely to be a rotted fuel tank or will it be the lock-ring and gasket seal?

Of course I won't really know until I drop the tank but I'm just trying to get a feel for the most likely outcome.

2nd question, if I have to drop the fuel tank is it work changing the pump?

An original AC Delco pump costs around $250 plus shipping to the UK but as usuall there are cheaper options.

Any advice on the best approach and what to buy would be very much appreciated!

Not unless you flip it over. Get a new ACD module and make sure you get a new replacement retainer ring(not included).
Run the tank as low as you can before you decide to remove it.
Clean, surface before you pull the module, clean the surface mount, and especially inspect/clean inside the tank before you install the new module. GL

Very much appreciate your advice, indeed I was looking at the same Rock page

From what I've seen, and yet to remove the inner fender, mine unit is in a similar condition.

Rock lists two ACDpumps, M10027 and MU1423 it looks like the latter includes the "fuel strainer"but neither show the gasket (its only a few bucks anyway)

There's also a Delphi FG0393, have to say their video looks more impressive than ACDelco's - any thoughts?

So at the moment my shopping cart is 1x ACD MU1423 Fuel Pump, 1x ACD G41 Tank Seal, 1x ACD TR26 Lock Ring (Retainer) - does this sound right?

Are
 fuel-sender wrench fuel-sender wrench
and pipe removal tools needed?

I ask all these questions as I'm in the UK, most parts have to be imported from the US so its not cost-ineffective to return them. We have no local GM support here (no stealerships)

Again any comments much appreciated !!!

No special tools required.. Remove/install lock ring with hammer and flat head/punch/ etc.. Takes more time removing old, since you will be fighting the rust. Release clips on the fuel lines and elect connectors.

Fuel pump normally includes seal, good idea to order 1 to make sure you have it, most important to install new seal.

There are plenty of videos on YT if you need more info on replacement.
Here's 1 to show you how to remove the lock ring:

Yep good advise! Do not get a cheap pump.... the original lasted this long. Dropping a fuel tank is not particularly hard but its not fun and not something you want to have to do again.

Thanks guy's, indeed as they say, "Buy cheap and you buy twice"

Yes it will certainly be all original ACD parts.

Great video!

Thanks Hummerz

I was just being lazy, looking at the shape I guess it had to be plastic.

Here in the UK magnets are like our workforce, only half of them work

So ordered new parts from RockAuto's Monday AM, they arrived Wed AM, so that's USA to UK in 2 days

H o w e v e r, the pump was badly packed and so the float-arm had broken-off in transit Also the unit was contaminated with polystyrene beads, not good for inside a fuel tank!

So paying extra for express DHL was to no avail, although I have to say Rock were very professional and quick in handling this, its just a shame things all went wrong and so frustrating.

At least I got to see an ACD fuel-pump/sender unit up close for the 1st time, I have to say the fuel-guage sub-assembly looks very low-tech and basic, no doubt other manufacturers units are the similar.

For the record, the tank seal/gasket did come as part of the unit.

Sorry abot this being the most boring post ever, its just tough owing a Hummer in the UK!

I get items delivered damaged all the time, mostly via UPS. An email to the sender with pics included takes care of it every time.
Recently I received a restaurant grade custom made butcher block counter top delivered that had a hole through the packing boxes and gouge in the top. I contacted the seller, sent pictures, they filed a claim with UPS, I repaired the top and received a 100% refund.
Oh, well, now you have extra time to run the fuel out... Drive until the warning light comes on, then let it run at idle where you are doing the repair. Also, while you are waiting for the replacement, spray pb blaster on the tank strap bolts..
