Getting ready to replace brake lines after a rear burst and trying to get all my ducks lined up before jumping in on this. Brake lines I have and pretty much know what I am up against.

The one thing I haven't addressed yet is dealing with the ABS system after. If I follow correctly without a Tech2 to trigger ABS bleed I may get codes and/or poor braking. Not having a Code Scanner started looking around and it appears that there are options galore on Amazon for the home mechanic. Anyone have experience and recommendations for one for a 2003 Hummer H2?

The two that I was looking at are

Autel OBD2 Scanner MaxiCheck MX808

FOXWELL BiDirectional Scan Tool NT809BT

but not sold on either and open to others that might make more sense. The above two seem very feature rich and tablet format with online updates available though I suspect not necessary if used mainly for the 2003 which I expect is fully baked out of the box w no updates to come. Around $450 each. I see cheaper ones and I suspect if my only goal is ABS I could go simpler but figure if I am jumping in might as well get something that will cover it all as I plan to have the H2 for some time.

I will add that I almost think all of these bi-directional scanners are being sourced from a single (China) source and rebranded since they all look identical even down to the Amazon descriptions short of branding. Perhaps it doesn't really matter which one you go with. As long as it covers the H2

Those are still more expensive than a clone Tech2 and will still not have access to or the ability to do some things that a Tech2 can. Rear air suspension (which you might not have or care about) as an example. I'm not aware of any other tool that can access that module other than the actual GM tools.

The nice thing on those others though is they can be very helpful with other brands of vehicles as well.

 

MixmanSC is right on. When you look at the big picture, Cost, Ability to diagnose, Being able to program modules and apply software updates, IMO nothing beats the Tech 2 platform, about the only drawback I can think of its only good for GM vehicles up to 2013 and many people do not want to buy a dedicated tool for a specific vehicle or brand. Mute point for me when I consider what I have invested in my H2. Not only that if it saves me 1 trip to the dealership its paid for itself! (BTW we are speaking of a Chinese clone)
