Military Surplus Hummer Mercedes Engine Swap
As we all know, the Diesel engine in the military surplus Hummer is fairly lacking in both the power and fuel economy categories. That got me thinking. Would it be possible or has anyone swapped the 6.5L V8 Turbo Diesel for the 3.0L V6 or 4.0L V8 Turbo Diesel found on the Mercedes Benz GL350 Bluetec? From a first glance, this seems like the perfect swap (if electronics can be figured out). The Bluetec has more power, torque, smaller displacement, lighter weight, and better fuel economy. I would love to see what your thoughts are on this. I have included some general specs of both engines/trucks for comparison purposes.
Humvee
HP - 190 HP @ 3400 RPM
Torque - 380 lb-ft @ 1700 RPM
Curb Weight - 5200lb - 5900lb
Mercedes Benz GL
HP (3.0L) - 181-261HP @ 3800RPM (depending on model year/variant)
Torque (3.0L) - 236 lb-ft - 457 lb-ft @2800-2400RPM (depending on model year/variant)
HP (4.0L) - 302HP @ 3600RPM
Torque (4.0L) - 516 lb-ft @ 2000-2600 RPM
Curb Weight - 5200lb - 5500lb

Gday,
rhe merc om642 td is the 3l but they have oil cooler seal issues and need the victim seal replacements. I imagined the same idea but have no h1 or humvee, saving for a H3 though for maybe a 2.8 dies swap one day if the petrol goes bang. Diesel is slightly cheaper here in oz.
who knows how long for. But the merc diesel is smooth and nice.
I believe they run the same or upgraded version in the g300d g wagons the military use here to.
