this bill they are trying to pass is actually a good idea, but it is not directed at just hummers, nor will it make it illegal to sell junkers to private parties.

this is really more for dealerships, but the owner of the veh. also gets a kickback on it too. the dealerships get a check for every clunker that they turn over to be scrapped. so in the end, it is more beneficial to trade your veh to a dealer and buy from them than to sell to a private buyer.

but the dealership cant turn around and sell off the clunker. they cant even part it out, otherwise they will lose out on the $$$$ they will get from the gov, which is about the same amount that the owner gets.

The Government needs to stay out of the automotive business....period!
If you think this is a "good idea", perhaps you've not thought this all the way through. Our freedom to purchase what we like is proposed to be taken away. If you think they'll give you market value for your Hummer when you go to trade it in at the dealer in, say 2011, then you're mistaken. The "change" that is proposed here is another of one of these tactics to push our wonderful country toward socialism. My "hope" is that BO fails at this.

The Sutton bill is the better one because it would get rid of some junky running cars. My best friend drives an '86 Caravan (with a carburetor) and it doesn't run that great. $3-5K from the govmnt would make for a nice down payment on a Cobalt.
How many times have you been on the road (in your evil HUMMERs) and seen a 15-20 year old compact bouncing on busted springs, crab walking down the road, white smoke spewing out the tailpipe?
But somehow a 2005 up perfectly running H2, Avalanche, F150 or Ram is a menace to society.
Safety should be a bigger concern than fuel economy. Excepting limited mileage vehicles registered as collector cars I say get rid of all cars without airbags or ABS. In later years we can encourage buyers to get cars with side airbags and stability control. It's also been proven that cars from about 1998 onward are safer in a collision so that's something to think about too.

This bill and the whole save the planet BS is a crock of $h!t. If they really cared about it and did their homework, they would see that diesel is the greenest short term fix around until they figure out how to make and mass produce decent batteries. The current movement blows my mind that they assume we all have the money to purchase brand new vehicles in the middle of a deep recession. No wonder we are in this financial mess; Mrs. Feinstein assumes we would be happy to take a HUGE loss on our vehicles in the name of saving the planet.

I work for a "green" company in Seattle, WA and I have taken quite a bit of heat from my coworkers about trading in my two SUV's and a lifted truck for a Hummer instead of a little Honda or Toyota. I just tell them they can pry my keys from my oil soaked, dead hands all the while reminding them that our own executive team all drive big trucks too and they are more than welcome to challenge them about their choices too. (The all drive F350's, Tahoes, Escalades or V12 M-B's)

We have something similar to that in Texas, and it actually helps sell MORE Hummers.

http://www.nctcog.org/trans/air/act/

It basically gives you $3k for trade if it's an old beater...then the state comes and dismantles it forever.

It's not a bad thing, here.

I really don't think there is any politician that worries about us and whether we can afford a new car or food on the table, it was never about us.

I'm beginning to wonder who voted this administration in, everyone I poll said they didn't vote for them.
The change we wanted won't come, the change "they" wanted will be here real soon.

If I saw BO say that he didn't need to spend all that money on inaugural perties, and say something like let's take that money provided by private organizations and put it in a fund to help those loosing their houses, I'd see "change".
If I saw himj not spend money on new china for the white house and say he will wait until the economy got better before spending government money for upgrades to the white house, I'd see "change", if I saw him cut back on the amount of cars in his entourage and see some bullet proof Priuses in the mix, I'd see "change", but I do not see any change, I see big spending as usual and money wasted as usual. Busch put money in our wallets at least, BO hands it off to people that really didn't need it and then complins to us on TV like we were the ones handing the cash over, he says nothing to them to hand the money back.

I wouldnt be concerned about it. its never going to happen. i can think of a half dozen vehicles less efficient than an H3 that should be crushed by the gov.
