I had asked about upgrading to factory nav on another forum and didn't hear too much about it other than to go aftermarket. Does everything function as it should FYR? OnStar, bose system, etc??

Oh yes. When I got my rig, it came with the 6 disk unit. When I upgraded to the Nav unit, one of the issues that I was worried about was my Onstar module going to still function just because I upgraded. Answer: yes.

My Onstar worked on both radios, the 6 disk and the Nav.....no issues there.

the aftermarket Nav units are more fancy and can do more than the factory nav but what they dont tell you is that the Onstar system wont interface with an aftermarket. Both units need to talk to one another. In all of the posts that I have ever read, I have not found any member that has an aftermarket unit installed say that they are also using their Onstar module and is still connected to it.

If youre going to stay with the factory Nav unit, then you wont need any of those adapters that you are seeing on eBay. Conversely, if you choose to go aftermarket, then plan on getting the adapter that you see there and add that cost in as well. Dont forget the wiring......you'll need to follow the instructions on the adapter so you can still use your Onstar. The adapter is simply a bypass circuit so you can use the Onstar. Again, additional cost and time to go aftermarket.

Now, I must inform you that if you get that $250 factory Nav unit from the junk yard, after you install it, you MUST take your rig to the dealer and have them put their OBD2 programmer in your rig to match the Nav units electronic serial number (ESN) to your rigs main module!!!!

When I did mine, and swapped out my 6 disk for the Nav unit, I started up my rig and turned on the unit, it immediately defaulted to an anti-theft mode and locked me out. So a quick trip to my dealer and they had it done in minutes. I was fortunate enough that they didn't charge me anything for the reprogramming. So be prepared to do this once you have it installed.

Connections to the Nav unit are pretty straight forward. The connections were all the same and I had to add a GPS antenna for the Nav portion of the unit. They do not come with one when you upgrade. Also, you can find the CD Rom for the maps to load into the Nav unit. The GPS antenna and the mapping CD Rom can be found on eBay or Amazon.

One last note; when the mapping CD Rom is installed, you may not use your CD player as it is using that function to help map you to wherever you are going in real time. However, the radio and XM functions will still work with no issues.

When in GPS mode, you may not change the address while your moving! You must be stopped to make any such changes. Some members have learned a workaround on this safety feature but I wouldn't recommend it. Its there for a reason. There is a Nav guide book that I have an electronic copy of so if you need one, let me know and I can send it to your email.

Wow the nav unit will just plug right in with no extra wiring or changes to the 6-disk harness?? So just the nav unit and GPS antenna and you're good to go? That doesn't sound bad at all. I'd like to have nav just for the hell of it since it looks so much nicer than the 6-disk!

Yes sir! I was surprised as well when I did mine. Since everything was factory, all the connections in the back were the same. All I had to add to the back of the Nav unit was that GPS antenna that I bought off Amazon. Everything was plug and play (minus having to run to the dealership for reprogramming).

Fyr thanks for the reply , i already knew about the lockout of the nav unit since its from another truck ... after what i went thru today im now definitely goin back to stock , next month im ordering the newer onstar module to replace the analog one that i have now and dont know if i want the nav or the 6CD radio. Im also taking off the older viper alarm since it has some issues with the autostart feature and going to get 2 factory key fobs instead ....

Hmer,

My rig is an '07. Mine looks like the one pictured below. They did update the factory Nav units in '08-'09. The part numbers for the factory Nav units are any one of these: 15230099, 10377531, 15800001

It varies depending if your rig has the Bose luxury system or just the deluxe version. Check your RBO sticker inside the glove box and look for the Y91 code.

If you decide to go with the 6 disk, and are looking for one, I can sell you mine cheap. Its just sitting in my garage in a cabinet and works just fine!
