Just took a closer look. It looks like there are 2 bolts on top, 1 on the bottom + the 4 wire clip and the 1-wire ground.

I think I see how the belt tensioner works...the final mystery to me is that it doesnt look like there is enough room to pull out the alternator. It looks like its buried under AC lines and a sideways escape looks blocked by the fuse box. Havent pulled a skid plate but from the serpentine diagram..I am pretty confident it wont drop out of the bottom either.

Found this one from Napa:

*In their picture, the actual alternator is rotated 180 degrees to mount on the engine

Default u wont think this is funny,,but

according to the 11 pound service manual,,sit down for this,,, jack and support vehicle, remove left front wheel,,,then drain the air cond system, remove air comp bolts,,move comp to allow access and removal of "generator"

the ez part is reversing the process to see if you will ever drive you H again.

did u say u were getting used to that whine,, or is it "wine"
??

hope someone found a way to beat this nightmare,,huh

tom

btw, did u ever tour an auto assm plant ?,,at HUMMER ASSM you walk in and at stage one there is a guy with a big box of,,"generators", the rest of the stuff gets added on from there.

im gonna look at possibility of cutting out a chunk of inner fender, i wouldnt want stuck messing with the air. would it ever work right again?? hope i dont need to,but long term, its gonna happen

Thanks drtom..good info!!!

But..WOW! That is exactly what it looked like was going to have to happen. I thought for sure I had to be wrong....

Yep..that whine sounds pretty good to me.
With the combination of my onboard air system dump valve and the alternator whine...I can make it sound like a nice little turbo and a BOV...ha!

Maybe I'll take a stab at carefully wiggling things out of the way...its only a couple bolts to play with it...at least see if I can get it out...but I think that dashes all hopes of putting in a larger alternator.

Does the manual say if there are any retainer clips or anything that would make it want to stay in place after the bolts are removed?

it seems to cover only the bad news,i would actually look for ANY way to avoid busting the air connections, including some body work. could be some serious metal there tho,but this thing has a frame so fender cant be too crucial. then too, once done its done for next time

tom

now i gotta go look!!

btw generator,is their term!

Default a top down look,,,

"Maybe I'll take a stab at carefully wiggling things out of the way...its only a couple bolts to play with it...at least see if I can get it out."

id go for it!!move batt and fuse box, those 2w wires at 125 fuse. then u might need to cut some metal,,or bend it.
also the lift brkt and wire bundle should move out of way.

take pix for evidence!

yrs ago the probe alt job called for pulling the axel,,i wiggled it out/in, took imagination.
