Remember Jeff that the H3 has a much larger gas tank.

This is my first SUV and I'm still shell-shocked. No wonder GM extended the 0%/60 months deal until SEPTEMBER! Every time I pass an H2 I just cringe at the thought of 10 mpg [:'(]

You're absolutely right, but I would get the same range out of those cars driving like an A$$ than I do grandma-ing around in the H3 (with a manual no less), about 330-350 miles to a tank. The difference between 23 mpg on Premium (@ $3.07) and 16 mpg on Regular (@ $2.85) driving around 1,350 miles per month works out to be $60 more for the H3 per month in fuel costs. 22 cents at the pump sounds like a lot, but 16 mpg is waaay more painful to the wallet.

Didn't you do your homework before buying the H3?
I personally feel a lot better driving around in a unique Hummer than some imported POS. I'm still enjoying my '07 H3

What do you think of Honda's "Element"? Is that an SUV or something else? Toyota now has a Hummer/LandRover look a like!!

Jeff,

Yeah, I did my math ahead of time but the reality is more painful than I thought. I was assuming that I could get around 18 mpg since with my other cars I regularly could beat the EPA estimates (pre-2008 figures too) by driving conservatively. I only have 2900 miles on my H3 but I'm still averaging 16 combined city/hwy. That dropof 2 mpg is an additional $26.72 a month at 1,350 miles/month or a whopping 79.6% more than my targeted figure.
I've got other hobbies besides my cars and the extra $60 a month its costing me to drive it eats into my other play-time budgets. I'm just whining out loud so I guess I shouldn't be surprised at the snappy replies. I do love my H3 and evenhad a blast doing a bit of off-roading this weekend, which reinforced why I bought it in the first place.
Importkiller's dad was a wise man - you do indeed have to pay to play.
Now for my own snappy reply - Imports beat American cars a$$es all day long - Americans agree, the numbers don't lie. They wouldn't have lost so much market share if they weren't caught up in group think and coming out with such sub-standard products (features, design, quality - just about every aspect of the car business). Vader's thread about "What would you have GM change" and the replies it garnered attests to all the simple things that GM isn't doing that foreign competitors areat the same or lower prices. This is the first American car I've bought in 10 years. It is much improved over the last one I had, but compared to the foreign competition across the spectrum of automotive choices, American car companies have a LONG way to go to compete on anything other than 0%/60 month financing PLUS incentives (read: dropping their pants to sell cars and trucks). The fact that GM STILL hasn't canned Rick Wagonerand Ford let Bill Ford lead them to the brink of disaster is evidence enough that they aren't going to move forward anytime soon. Chrysler is even rumored to possibly be chopped up and sold off into oblivion by its new American slice-n-dice private equity group. Nice.
It's sad how far the American auto industry has fallen since Harley Earl was truly innovating and setting design standards for the rest of the world.
Jeff
I'm too tied up in other threads to reply to this....but it's on my list
one question though...if imports are 100% better than american...why did you even buy the h3? I'd challenge ANY import to go offroad against my hummer, my bro's rubicon or my Ram...and I'll race any import car with my GN...you should of bought the fj...much better fit...I think it even comes with tissues to wipe you whiney little tears with.

Don't take it personal, that's just ignorant. I said I enjoyed my H3 and even complimented your previous comment. I stated my opinion in response to what was previously said, and I backed it up with facts. Now go get your shine box.

Well, me being an European, I think your statement on the American car industry is only partially correct since you cannot ask 'mass producers' to be on the same standards than niche manufacturers.
I would'nt call the american production :'sub-standard products (features, design, quality - just about every aspect of the car business)'. They are designed to fit your domestic market demand and their main problem is that they haven't seen early enough the change in the American people mentality.
Yes, the Europeans firms are producing technologically advanced cars compared to the Americans ones but don't forget that they where OBLIGED to invest heavily in R&D due to various factors:
- We have several 'niche' brands that have sets the standards for the industry:
Jaguar, Aston martin, Porche, Ferrari/maserati,bentley and on a larger scale BMW.
- Several large firms started on the upper market segment, like Mercedes and Audi and became global based on the quality and technology of their top end vehicule.
-Our road system and our tax system, specifically for gas where 95% of the gas price is taxes, has, again,OBLIGED the Europeans car manufacturers to develop new engines, new chassis.....etc
- The EEC has come with a lot a very demanding rules and obliged the manufactures to go back to the drawing board a number of time.
The end result is that, yes our cars are technologicaly more advanced BUT the price of the cars in Europe is about the double, or even the triple for some br
Jmm,
You may have been making some valid points but somewhere in your lenghty text I feel a sleep!
I'm just Pro-American. I was born American, served in the Navy and own my own manufacturing company. Americans buy my products and in turn I buy American products when I can.
It's my mind-set. Something just isn't right IMO.
