Default vapor leak in tank/filler area

Need help!! Squirrels ate a hole in the vapor tube between my tank and my filler neck which caused the engine light on my dash to light up, and occasionally the dash blinks "tighten gas cap". I took my Hummer to the dealer and they said the tube was intregal to the tank and could fix the problem for $3500 (a new tank). I cut out the damaged section of tube and used a length of 1/4 inch fuel hose and two hose clamps and replaced the section. The light still comes on even after I reset the gauge cluster by unhooking the battery for a few minutes. The light comes back on after a few days. I also smell fuel when I park the Hummer and pass the fuel door area. Yes, I replaced the gas cap with another General Motors cap. No change. It is driving me crazy to have this nice vehicle and have to put black tape on the dash so that I don't have to look at the engine light all the time.

Help!!

Thanks,

Mark
