Hi, I'm new to this forum. I got 3 kids (6,3, and 8 weeks) and i'm looking for MY family vehicle. My wife has a New Honda mini-van, but i want my own truck, so i got it down to Dream Truck:1. Hummer H2, 2. Cadillac EXT, or 3. Tahoe/GMC equivalent. I commute 37 miles each way to work. Is the Hummer H2 out of the question for daily driver interstate commuting?

 

For what reason would you think it may be out of the question? As far as fuel economy goes, you're going to get nearly the same gas mileage out of all of them - maybe 1 or 2 mpg better in the Tahoe.

For the minimal fuel price difference (if that's indeed what you're worried about), go with something you'll actually enjoy driving all 37 miles. For dealing with jerks in traffic everyday, I'd need an H2..

 

yeah i am worrie about fuel cost, but do you really think they are all that close on fuel mileage? Really I dont know. I have never owned a GM product. Is there anyone here commuting daily more than 80 miles a day.

 

I just traded a 2004 GMC Yukon for my 2006 H2. The gas mileage is less than a 2 mpg difference. It is true. The Yukon averaged just under 15 MPG, the H2 is getting 13 doing the same type of driving. I put about 8,000 miles a year on my SUV, I'll pay the difference anyday.
If you buy a 2008 or later, you might meet or exceed the Yukon's mileage. 6.2 engine, 6 speed tranny, and 3.70 gears instead of 4.10. Any 2008 owners care to verify?

 

that sounds good, or at least better than i thought. i'm looking at about 400 miles a week commuting. 90% interstate going the opposite way of rush hour morning and evening traffic. i found a 06 H2 with 73,000 for $24,988 here in Nashville Tn. it looks to be in great shape. still got to drive it though.

 

Not sure where you are looking but check craigslist..thats where I found my loaded 05 with only 28k miles for the same price..

And as for the gas thingy..if your looking at escalades tahoes equivalent, gas wont be much of a difference, a lil worse in the H2 but not by much..but then you'll be driving a H2

I just rode down to the beach in my 2006 H2 and held right at 18 MPG

 

Reality check: If you "worry about fuel cost", this is NOT the vehicle for you. Go buy something smaller.

People who drive H2's do not give a hoot about gas mileage. They drive it since there is nothing else like it on the road.... and it is fun!

1-Got three kids...10, 7 and 6 wks.

2-I drive about 35 miles (round trip) to work.

3-Wife drives a Honda Odyssey.

I wanted a full-sized SUV. Plus we have a 20" hybrid camper we were pulling with the Honda and it was just too much for the Ody...gonna damage the trans.

Wanted a SUV that would fit in the garage, length wise is the issue.

Looked at 4-door short bed pick=ups but they are too long. Looked HARD at Escalade (have you seen the prices on Escalades?!?!?), Tahoe/Yukon and Expedition...but everyone around us who has a full-size SUV has one of these..boring. I am still vain/silly enuf I wanted something different.

Watched a video on YouTube of the H2 and its capabilities and was blown away. Drove one on a local used car lot and was even more blown away...very comfortable.

Now am the pound owner of a slightly used 2006 H2...and I LOVE IT.

If the MPG has you freaked and you know yourself well enuf that it will always be an issue if gas goes to $2.75, $3.00, $3.25 a gallon...I would he honest with yourself and avoid the H2.

If you want something different with capabilities you will likely never use or need...but appreciate they are there if the need arises, go after the H2....I think you'll love it.

I would suspect you will find the H2 running 11-13 MPG if your doing alot of highway driving/commuting and the other full-sized SUVs 17-19 MPG. Not a huge difference, honestly which is what sold me on the H2...I love the H2 and I wasn't saving all that much with the other listed alternatives.

For me I drive about 10K a year, give or take. So lets do a little math.

H2
10,000 miles at 10 MPG (the worst I will likely experience) at $3.00 (full .50$ over where it is expected to go within the near future)
= 3,000 gallons a year or $3,000.00

Other Full-Size SUVs
10,000 miles at 17 MPG at $3.00 a gallon
=588 gallons a year or $1764.00

$3,000.00 minus $1764.00

$1226.00 extra a year to drive the H2. Or about a hundred bucks a month. I'm not rich, but I can afford this and choose to. I made a conscious decision....you should too.
