Unhappy Trouble Code P0236

My 97-1/2 H1 is running fine except for a little smoke when you accelerate fast.
The problem is that the "Check Engine" light comes on every 100 miles or so and when I reset it, the Trouble Code P0236 shows up. The code means Turbo/Super Charger Boost Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance. Can anyone explain what that means and what should I do- if anything- to keep the Check Engine light off?
My H1 has only been driven 30,000 miles and very seldom off-road. Mostly I use it to surf fish on the beach but would not enjoy being stuck with the tide coming in :-( !!

It sounds to me like you are overboosting the engine...

did anybody tweak it? A programmer will cause issues like that.

Could be a bad MAP sensor, bad connection or contact at the MAP sensor. Check to make sure it is pluggged in tightly and the contacts aren't oxidized.

Default 97-1/2 Trouble Code

Thanks for your help (again).

So you don't think the Code and minor smoking would indicate an engine condition- say rings or other major problems?

What color is the smoke? blue, white, or black?

black smoke is fuel and with the overboost points to a MAP....

blue smoke is oil and would point more toward another possible engine issue

Default Smoke Color

From the driver's seat I would say black. Normal driving results in no smoke. When you are driving slowly and suddenly push the accelerator pedal to the floor, that is when you see the black smoke in the rear view mirror but, not that much of it.

That sounds normal for a 6.5 turbo diesel.

How much smoke?

Can you still see the cars behind you? Is there any particulate?

Default H1 Smoke

Very little black smoke- noticeable but hard to discern from looking in the rear view mirror. When warming up the truck in the driveway, if you gun the engine a few times, some black residue leaves an impression on the concrete.

Barry as I stated before, that sounds normal. Not sure you have anything to worry about.
