ok. I want to tow a Dodge Charger on a tow dolly about 2000 miles. What does everyone think?
Ive got a 2002 h1 6.5 turbo.
Im gonna install an extra electric fan on top of the coolers,

i heard that I have to tow in drive and not overdrive? How true is that? Does it really matter and why?

If you are towing on flat terrain you should be ok. Drive by your temp Guage. Keep temps at 210 or below which means to won't be towing at 70 mph. I would rent a different vehicle to tow with 2000 miles at 55mph is a long trip.

 

The problem is I'm moving and I own 2 vehicles. So my best option seems to be towing the charger and driving the hummer. It's 1600 to ship one car. And it's only 750 in fuel if I was averaging 8mpg....

 

The charger alone likely gets close to maxing the H1 tow capacity. If on a trailer tow by the temp gauge.

 

Where are you moving from and to? If you can get one vehicle transported for 1600 it probably wont be much more for having both transported. I have a great autotransport guy in texas if you need.
Btw- if anyone ever towes ANY vehicle with a turbo ( especially long-distance!) you should duct tape the exhaust pipe closed. When the engine is at TDC( top dead center) of exhaust stroke both valves are open at the same time- this is called valve overlap. Being pulled down the road will cause air to flow back up thru the exhaust pipe causing the turbo so spin with no oil lubrication ,thru the cylinder that is in over lap and out the air filter intake. This will kill your turbo!!! So the $ .25 of duct tape will save your engine. If you forget to remove the duct tape before starting the truck it will just blow out the tape and you will hear a loudish boom/ pop. It shouldent cause any dammage but a good idea to just remove the tape before starting it up.
