I did a search, but don't see this question addressed. I did not read the towing specifications before I bought my H3, but why is it that the owners manual says automatics can tow more than manuals? It is actually quite a bit of towing difference.

My Manual says that the Auto H3 can tow (I'm at work, going off of memory) around 5,000 lbs but my 5 Spd can only tow around 3500ish lbs. What is the reason for that? are they worried about clutch damage or is it because the transmission is more fragile?

Clutch Damage is a major concern when towing heavier loads. Lite duty transmissions and clutches are totally different than Heavy Duty ones found in Commercial type trucks.

 

I did some research and it has to do with gearing and torque, basically your standard tranny doesn't have low enough gearing to provide a smooth transition when pulling loads and the clutch is the week point. Autos have higher gear ratios and plus the converter is a torque multiplier giving more power to pull where as a clutch doesn't multiply your engine torque.

 

Rats, well that answers my question.

My wife and I have been toying with the idea of getting quads and a trailer, I will be sure to check weights on all those items and take that into consideration when and if we get them.
