Thinking of buying a military surplus Humvee
Hello all,
I've been looking at the military surplus humvee auctions. Some look like they are in decent shape and some pretty tore up. I'm looking to buy a project vehicle and the Humvee seems like a great choice. But, I wanted to come on here and ask the H1 owners the pros and cons to owning a humvee. I.e. Maintanence, break downs, and things of that nature... What have been your major issues with yours. By the way, i live in cali, so if anyone has purchased a military humvee and brought it to and registered it here in Cali. Whats the process and is it even worth it getting it to pass smog and pay all the fees. Thanks in advance for any input.

Hey Diesel91, I was looking a purchasing one too, but I don't do enough off-roading to justify it. They are sold for off road use only. If you do get one and get it all sorted out, let me know the process.
Thanks!!
Thanks!!
GovPlanet - Surplus Military and Government Vehicles, Trailers and Equipment is a good place to start. I looked at buying one for my ranch, but it seemed like a lot of red tape and they are not allowed on DOT roads. Additionally the inside is a war machine and lacks virtually any amenities. Not sure if that is important to you but I wanted to get one street legal and get the inside a bit more accommodating for my life style. Cool rig nonetheless.
Downsides are that many of the Gov Planet trucks are in need of a lot of work. The electrical systems are 24 volt, not 12 volt. There is some red tape to buying them but not as much as it may seem. I know people are getting them registered in some states for on road use even but not aware of anyone that has done it in CA. I am not sure that no one has registered one in CA I just don't know of anyone. I have thought about buying one for ranch use but don't have time for a project right now.
