Very possible and has been done before.

$= depends on where you find one

It is a drop-in/bolt-on/plug-n-play swap.

Worth it? Depends on what you do with your HUMMER OffRoad.

Default lower $ ratio

right now if you didnt know which one you had you couldnt tell the difference. both give a very low gear. rpm go up higher with 4:1 so you go slower and have more control but you wont notice and wont affect getting stuck/unstuck.
its another one of those things that is fun to talk about!
find a parking lot that has those cement park stops and practice slowly climbing over them, front and back.
if its important to you to be able to do that, like rock climbing, then go for the 4:1 , later go back and climb that park stop again and report back.
one thing you will notice is a much lighter wallet. and you'll have a spare transfer case!

Look on ebay and Craig's list to start.

You have to ask yourself, what kind of off roading are you going to do? The lower range T Case is more for rock crawling than anything else. If your buds wheel in dirt, sand, or snow, the lower T Case won't make a significant difference. Tires would be much more important.

If you have mall crawler tires, forget about your T Case question, spend $$ in tires.

Agreed DOC, If you haven't already invested in Tires, revocery and Protection that should be first on the list.

The 4:1 Tcase is a low gear "crawler" case. If muddin' is your thing a rear locker would be the best upgrade after the above stuff.

UCP (under carriage protection) should be first on your list of protection items. Can't drive home with a smashed oil pan or tcase. Then some rock rails if you see rocks, stumps, berms, etc.

Recovery: yank strap and some shackles.

Locker: I would have someone who regularly does gear work do the locker. Electronic lockers don't require a compressor like the ARB lockers.
