Swapping rubber seals on gas caps - Code p0442
Just got the p0442 code a few weeks back on my 2006 H3. The code indicates a small leak a fuel vapor leak in the EVAP control system. I bought a Stant gas cap #10841 to replace the GM cap. I looked at the stock gas cap to see if there was a way to dissemble the old cap to incorporate the new gas cap. I was hoping to use the cap retainer and other items to keep the stock look. I gave up trying to take it apart. I took the rubber ring off the new cap and put it on the old cap. Been driving for 3 weeks and no code. In the future if this happens again I'm going to see if I can buy just the seal.
I had the same code come up almost exactly at 100k miles. I just sprayed silicone on the gasket and "massaged" it in there good with a clean rag until all the dirt and grime was gone. No code now for over 2 mos.
Onstar is great for reading CE light and giving you diagnosis.

WOW, all the posts on this forum for wasting money on lifts, rims, mods, and no funds to buy a gas cap?
Seriously, I have a good oe cap in my garage, because I purchased a locking NAPA cap (BK 7031724) when I purchase my rig over 2yrs ago.
I spent $12.00 bucks, for my MOD (locking gas cap).
I have NEVER received a P0442, before or after the mod cap replacement.
