I think you are good with 5W-30 Mobil 1, I run it in mine and it likes it.

IMHO there is not any significant improvement in going to Amsoil, but Amsoil and Royal Purple are also both excellent synthetic oils.

I currently use Amsoil 0W-30 and their brand oil filter on my motor. I haven't really noticed a difference but the piece of mind was my goal to achieve. I use Amsoil 0W-30 in my 03 Cobra as well.

Amsoil has consistently rated one of the BEST oils.

But I think that any true synthetic oil would be good.

For the northern climates I would suggest running 0W-30 Mobil Synthetic. For a high milage vehicle I might suggest going to a 10W-30.
Otherwise I'd stick with a 5W-30 Mobil full synthetic.
I did run a Ford Ranger 6cyl for 40,000 miles between oil changes using Mobil1. All I did was replace the oil filter every 3K. When I got rid of the truck with 105K on it, it still had no issues at all with the engine. I swear by Mobil1 and think it is the most cost effective solution for long troublefree engine life.

I can vouch for the effectiveness of Amsoil. I own a 2001 Mustang GT, and I've had it since it was new. At about 21k miles, I switched to Amsoil. I'm currently at around 47k miles, and I haven't had a single problem with it. No oil leaks, sludge, or oil burn-off. In fact, I once went 15k miles between oil changes using Amsoil, and nearly 1000 miles of that 15k was put on the car overnight (moved from Virginia to Missouri and drove the whole way overnight). After the 15k miles, I drained the oil, and although it was dark, it still wasn't black. There was no sludge, metal shavings, or any visible dirt or grime. The oil was still really slick, and as clean as could be (from a visual and feel standpoint). I didn't notice any decrease in gas mileage or loss of power during this 15k period either. It's good stuff. When I change the oil in the H3, I will putting in Amsoil.

Note: I'm not saying Amsoil is oh so superior to every oil on the market, nor am I advising someone go 15k miles between oil changes. I'm simply sharing my experience with Amsoil.

BTW, the "30" number in the motor oil number is the weight of the oil at normal operating temperatures. If you're REALLY worried about the intensity of the heat, you can always run the 40 weight formulas, but I don't see where it's going to give you any serious benefits. Also, I don't know if GM approves of using a heavier weight of oil in the H3, so if you're vehicle is still under warranty, you might want to check with GM first.

Use 5-30. The engineers designed the engine to operate with 5-30 and I guarantee they have more brains and budget than any of us ever will. Well..at least a bigger budget
