Default Starter/Flywheel Issues?

I'll start by saying that I'm new to the Fourm, I've searched and read a few threads and hope to maybe find a few anwsers to some of the questions I haven't found anwsers to just yet.

Anyways, I just picked up my 2nd H1 on Monday and I'm pumped about it, this one is a 2000 ST. When I test drove it on Saturday I noticed that a couple of times while I was attempting to start it, the starter sounded like it was just spinning.... Now that I have brought it home, I have found out that the starter that is on it now is new and the second one on it in the past few months. I'm starting to think that the issue may be a flywheel problem? Sometimes the engine will crank right up and other times the starter just sounds like it is spinning. Has anyone ever had this problem or have their 2 cents to throw in?

If it is a flywheel issue, how hard is it to pull and replace the flywheel?

Thanks in advance, Zach

I would take the starter off and inspect it for serviceability. if it is good, more then likely it is the flexplate. the starter doesnt actually touch the flywheel, it engages onto the flexplate that has teeth on it. what is prob happening is that a section or maybe a few sections have damaged/worn/missing teeth and when you shut it off it happens to stop on those sections. but def check the strter first.

I had some help this weekend and crawled under for a better look while someone above cranked on it a few times... Looks now that the starter isn't extending out and engaging the felxplate sometimes during cranking.

well before you buy a new starter, take it some where and have it tested. you can also take it off and hook a pair of jumper cables to your battery. attach your ground cable to the ground on the starter. then with everything out ot the way of the gear, and your body weight on the starter(or a buddys *** on the starter, touch the power to the positive terminal on the starter. this will allow you to see if it is engaging all the way. BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN DOING THIS. The starter will try to spin itself around like a top if not held down when you first put power to it. Or like I said, just take it to a starter shop, have them check it out and see how much to rebuild it or core it out. i think aa new starter is like almost a grand. Here is the one that SS Diesel Supply offers. It has a Lifetime Warrenty too!!!!!
