well,we had to go back to the drawing board,the first rack just wasnt strong enough and gunner wanted it bigger,so i went this route,1"tubing and it will have expanded stainless steel metal fo the bottom,it is big enough to fit over a 35" tire and right now will hold 60lbs,as thats how much my kid weighs,let me know what ya think

That looks great and I am always looking for another way to bring stuff I don't really need with me on my trips .

The only question is - will the door stand up to the torque applied by such a long lever? A 35" tire is sort of like a 17 1/2" crowbar applied to the middle of the door, this is an even longer one. Driving around with a cooler would apply some of the force downwards, but also away from the door - like a can opener. Maybe some sort of strap over the top so that it can't bounce away from the door?
Anyway, it does look cool and I hope a I am wrong cause I'd like to have one of those myself.

Flex on the door panel has been a big concern for anyone who has built/used one of these things.
(or anyone putting a 35 inch tire and wheel on that spare tire mount)
So far, no one seems to have suffered any damage from using one of these racks. I've
seen folks on several other forums load 'em up with everything but the kitchen sink and
claim to have not had any problems. Personally, I don't plan on putting a bunch of weight
on this one and will try to have the load oriented as close to the door as possible. It's not
just the door panel, you also have to worry about the hinges and possible misalignment
of the door itself. (I wonder if that is why AMSTAR quit selling their version of it)

This thing is strictly for bulky yet lite items, stinky, muddy, wet crap that you don't want INSIDE the rig on a trip.
Packed out trash, fish coolers, recovery gear, cooler loaded with a suitable amount of adult beverages...etc.

Plus it's not something I want to leave on all the time. Everything but the main support can be removed by
simply turning a few ***** and can be stored in the barn.

Once Mike gets it dressed out and we get a coat of Black Krylon Hammer Finish on it...Should look really nice.

 

this should really be the cats meow,as far as load,i dont see any flex on it when i apply pressure,it bolts to the top two bolts on the door,and those are pretty sturdy,i dont think he will have any problems with this
