Smoke on startup.
I was having the typical signs of a leaky injector or 8 with the truck smoking and chugging for a minute or so on startup. So I purchased new injectors since they were already pushing 95,000 miles. I made darn sure to keep the injectors clean and not bend the injector lines while doing the swap. I'm still having the same symptoms. Any ideas? The IP has about 15,000 miles on it. PMD has been replaced twice because the first replacement went bad prematurely. The smoke and chugging clears up after about a minute just like before. 1997 6.5 TD
Mine had smoke on start up and I was told it was a leaky injector. But I changed all the glowplugs and replaced my fuel filter and it doesn't do it any more. Not sure if those changes cleared it up or if it will show up again when the weather gets colds.
We have a client that had this happen. It was a cracked #8 cylinder. What would happen is it would smoke when cold started but as soon as the engine got hot enough the crack would close up and it would be fine. This eventually failed of course but it stayed this way for a long time.
Smoking during start up could also be a few other things:
- engine not turning fast enough (unburnt fuel)
- leaking injector (unlikely)
- glow plugs not working or not working properly
