The pic on their webpage is the roll-on version of the bed armor, and you are correct it doesn't lay down very even, but I've used both of their spray liners and the spray can version of the newer bed armor goes on as even as the older stuff you used but it does have a bit more texture due to the rubber content.

After the regular product flaked off my Jeep bumper, I stripped the bumper down and used the new water based formula which seemed to hold up much better.
