I recently purchased an H3 and am currently at 5,000kms on the odometer. The engine oil change light has yet to come on and my monthly Onstar notification says I do not need to change my oil until 12,000kms. Does this make sense as I am used to changing my oil every 3 months or 5,000kms (whichever comes first).

Thoughts?

Never got a hold of the metric system but its about 4,000 miles on regular oil and about 10,000 miles on synthetic oillike Mobil 1. My last oil change I used Mobil 1. Removing those skid shields is a PITA and I wanted to do it less often!

P.S. What's with OnStar notification? My '07 never did that.

 

My OnStar says the same thing and expalins it by saying the H3 has a complex system that monitors Temp, Miles and Usage to come up with an oil change recomendation. I've got about 3,500 on my original oil but I think I'll change it soon to Mobil One. Not that I don't trust the new White Man's Magic for figuring an oil change but I trust my instinct better.

Just change it at regular intervals, it cheap preventative maintnance

 

Thanks for all the feed back. Wasn't sure how much I should trust the whole "Onstar" technology. Onstar suggesting changing my oil @ 12,000kms (7,500miles) seems kinda fishy to me w/ regular oil.

 

I hopes that's not your first oil change on a new motor? I changed mine at 1,000 miles. Some do it sooner to get rid of any manufacturing machining crap.

 

I use Mobil 1 and I use the GM oil life system.... it comes out to around 6000 miles and my oil is a nice dark tan color.... 7500 mile synthetics have been proven to have minimal shear and enough protection well into 20-30000 miles....

Don't you guys watch the land rover commercials??? 41,000 miles on just one oil change....

 

Mobil1 and using the oil life system makes perfect sense to me as you are using the factory recommendation as well as an oil that holds up longer. This is what I do on our H2 & H3.
