Hi,
I´m from Germany and yesterday I was at the dealer for the 30.000 km (20.000 miles)inspection of my H3. They said that the oil seal ring of the rear differential is broken and has to be replaced. My question: Is it normal that it is broken after 20.000 miles? Well, okay I do offroad very often but it should last longer.

I have almost 40k miles on mine and haven't had anything leak. My differential is completely dry. Then again, I don't off-road very much

 

An oil seal is a part. Parts are sometimes defective, or not installed properly from the factory (egad, factory rat not doing their job? I've never...........) or subject to abuse and just break. 20k is not a normal life span, but that is why a new car warranty is a valuable asset. I had 160k miles on my last GMC and had no seal problems, rear differential or otherwise. I have had brand new seals go bad in a few thousand miles???? Roll of the dice, but I would bet that after the dealer replaces your seal you should have no further problems. Say hi to my cousins at Rentschler Moving in Deutchland Bro.

My 2007 H3 auto only has 4,400 miles and it has been leaking one drop of oil a day, about half the size of a dime of oil, for a week now. Its appears to be dripping around the differential area. The oil appears clear with a tiny drop of black, guess this could be road dirt....
I have a call into the dealer for an apt and I will mention the seal part. Did they keep your H3 over night or days????

@HERHMR: No, they just made the normal inspection, I have to make another appointment for next week.

 

Is it the pinion seal (by driveshaft) or the outer axle seal (by the reartire)?

either one it is an easy fix esp under warranty.

 

I think it´s the pinion seal but I´m not completely sure.

 

That's really luck of the draw.... I had a set of gears put in by a great shop... lasted until I broke the pinion.... second set they put in the pinion sealleaked.

Even if it isn't under warranty it isn't that hard of a repair.

I justreceived my H3 out of the service dept. They had to replace the rear diff gasket, which is under warranty...... only 4,400 miles on it!
