oil question
Dennis,
Something looks odd to me.
With my former MB ML, the oil was changed every 20.000 km (12.000 miles) as suggested in the owner manual.
same thing in the XJR and my other cars.
we use only synt. oil here since years and no dealer - for whatever brand- will think about using anything else.
having said that, my question is:
why, in hell, we have to change the oil in the H3 every 4/5000 miles.
FYG I have contacted GM Europe, and their reply was: follow the DIC, the mileage between oil changes depend of various parameters like: driving habits, wheather.... the average oil life in Europe is 12/15000 km (7500/9500 miles)........
what is your opinion??

Hi Jean,
Those are the bare minimums to keep your car going until at least the end of the warranty...They are not the most optimum scheduled maintenance for longivity, only the basic needed care...Some cars hold up better under those bare minimum standards than others..I don't take chances with something as cheap and as benificial as an oil change more frequently...piece of mind and cheap insurance for extending a trouble free life for the engine.
I've said this before..In doing this little extra oil chnges in the past 35 years of driving..I have not EVER, had an engine problems in any of the many cars that I have owned...So why disturb the natural order of things when my way has at least proven itself to be a sound and safe assurance of reliablity and extended engine life..
I may very well be totally crazy in the way I'm thinking..But at least I'm content[sm=yeahsmile.gif]...Proof is in the pudding as we say.

OK, I am a little perplexed here...I thought they ALL came from the dealership with syn oil in them already?? (Yes, I know you can opt to change that at will) And hows come many of you guys change the oil SO frequently (3K-4K miles) when synthetic oil does last longer and the dealership/manual insists (mine did anyway) that 12K is fine? I have always been an advocate of regular 3K-3500K mile oil changes in my previous vehicles, and I do have a hard time with the concept of going 12K mi before change...but why the 3K-5K miles for many of you using the syn oil? I, like Dennis wish to prolong the life of my rides with the best of care and always have..so which is it with the syn? 3K, 5K, 10K, 12K???
Every 5000 miles would be more than enough..It's not the Synthetic oil that breaks down, it's the dessolved solids and combustion contaminates that you rid the engine of with the frequent oil changes (filters do only the big chunks)...There is always more than one reason for things and this is the one reason I change at every 5K miles.

Paige Sweetie..You can ask anything you want...I will always be more than happy to repeat an old topic for you..[sm=smiley9.gif]
Anyways my love..I for one endorse the use of Synthetic engine oil..You will better off in the long run...believe me...But now that you use it, you really should never go back to conventional oils, it will mess with the chemistry of the engine...I can't explain it too clearly what exactly happens, but it will have an adverse affect on the engine seals.
