Default Newb Tow Questions

Afternoon Folks,
I'm new to my 2003 H2 with 86k. I'm looking at purchasing my first travel trailer. I'm really concerned about the weight of the trailer. The only mods my deuce has is 20x9 rims and 35x12.5r20 tires.

We are looking at 2 trailers.

2011 Trail Cruiser 26' -
Dry Weight (lbs/kg) 4446 / 2016.7
Payload Capacity (lbs/kgs) 1714 / 777.5
GVWR (lbs/kgs) 6160 / 2794.2
Hitch Weight (lbs/kgs) 566 / 256.7
Number Of Axles: 2

2013 R-Vision Trail-Lite crossoverr
Dry Weight (lbs/kg) 3240 / 1469.7
Payload Capacity (lbs/kgs) 2610 / 1183.9
GVWR (lbs/kgs) 6160 / 2794.2
Hitch Weight (lbs/kgs) 310 / 140.6

The wife wants the larger trailer. We have 3 yr old twins and wants some room to grow. I would not mind the larger trailer but alas, I will be driving.

We are in Oregon so there is a good chance we will see steep grades at times during the summer.

Appreciate any honest feedback that you have

Download the owners manual from GM for one. With the size and weight of the trailer you are lookign at I'd make very certain you are familiar with balancing a trailer optimally (critical for safe towing), trailer brakes will be critical, sway stabilizer.... Definitely do this mod so you don't overheat your transmission in the first 100 miles. https://www.hummerforums.com/forum/h...-cooler-35751/

The attached is the trailering pages from the owners manual.

thank you so much for the reply! I had looked over the owners manual and I appreciate sending me the pages. I have the trans cooler upgrade - it's in my cart from amazon as we speak. The second trailer on my list, 21' 2013 R-Vision is 1200lbs lighter (dry) than the 2011 26' R-Vision. What weight can we tow w/o doing the trans cooler mod? Thanks again.

I can't help you with the weight since I never tow anything.

You will want to do the trans cooler mod no matter what. It's meant to prevent the stock in radiator tranny cooler from rusting and mixing ATF with coolant which these are prone to do. Bypassing the internal cooler and removing the stock external tranny cooler with a larger one resolves the issue.

Im towing now the new boat (3700 dry /~5600pnd with trailer and gas) just did 200 miles on flat terrain with the tranny cooler mod @ 100° temp / 100% humidity

Going low speeds (45/50 ) was fine but as soon I got the highway the temp gauge was a 1/3 over the 210° and slowly climbing. I never see it going over 210 so I turn the Ac off and that helps. out was a 210 steady but Ac off in Fl summer is not fun

I had the Tranny mod and even it was still fine the gauge reads 25°(185°) more than usually (165°)
So I guess without the mod tranny will runs pretty hot
all this with the trailer towing option On

other than that it was fine. no problems braking or with power .

I will look to mod the cooling system soon

Is it possible to test your truck with the larger trailer in the worse weather/ road conditions ?

I would go for the lighter trailer. It will pull easier and if you ever get a different tow vehicle your options will be much greater with a lighter trailer.
