New Owner of H3
Hi to all.
Just taken over 2006 H3 in place of Jeep. Should have done this a long while ago.
Interesting stuff in the forums.
Got a couple of small issues but nothing major.
In the manual it says use dex-cool 50/50 antifreeze. Is this really necessary, can a different make of 50/50 be used to top up expansion bottle
The engine seems to run a little hot, hence my asking about the topping up of the fliud. The radiator is full, but the expansion bottle is well below level.
The Dvd screen at the back seem ok, but how do they work? I have no remote. They are vizau logic, that is all it say.
The interior rear view mirror.....The compass just says CAL and the temperature does not work, it just reads 5C. Tried to calibrate as per manual, but no joy at all.......
Any suggestions welcomed.
I want to put one of those air filters on it that come out of the body and up the side, but I do not know what they are called. a name or a supplier would be helpful.
I also want to change the filter for a k&n one, I assume best place to get this is off 'Flea Bay'
Have any owners fitted those roof lights to their H3. are they easy to fit?
Well that is about it all in one go pretty much rather than putting a bunch of posts up.
Look forward to replies.

Hi Chris,
I can offer a couple of replies.
First it is not a good idea to mix a non-DexCool fluid with the DexCool that's already in the radiator. Mixing those fluids sometimes causes a gelling of the fluids which causes a clogged radiator.
The external filter you asked about is called a Snorkle.
ARB 4x4 Accessories makes a nice one for the H3.

yes, ARB is really the only snorkel that i hear about the most.
as far as the antifreeze, and anyone correct me if im wrong, should not be of any concern if you are located in Miami. However, if this winter you have any road trips up north, then i would stick with what GM says about using DexCool. it sounds as though in the manual that the engine was engineered to use DexCool. im not an engineer but rather be safe than sorry.
if the DVD is aftermarket, then there's no telling how to fix that from this forum other than to replace it or take it to a car audio/visual shop.
the rear view mirror will probably require the dealer to look at it. trucks are so computerized these days, that trying to work on anything electronic might be more of a hassle than anyone would bargain for.
lastly, im not sure which roof lights you are referring to? there are the roof marker lights and the roof mounted off-road lights that are GM accessories. and if youre referring to that, all i can say is that they sure do make the truck look better.
hope this helps and hopefully you get more feedback on here.
cheers and welcome to the forum!

Interesting about the dex-cool stuff..............
Where is this stuff available from?? I am not from here and have never heard of it. I agree with keeping it the same though if mixing or ch
anging will give me a problem
Thanks for the info on the snorkle. See if I can find one.
Dvd, yes I did take to a couple of places but no joy. Maybe I will try and get in touch with manufacturer.
I'll see if I can find those roof marker lights aswell.
Thanks again for the help.

Like Tom says, DexCool is a type of antifreeze.
Zerex, Prestone, Texaco Havoline all make DexCool antifreeze.
Even Autozone & NAPA Auto have house brands of DexCool.
If the marker lights that you want are the OEM ones like mine below, then those marker lights were available only through the dealer parts department. It is going to be extremely difficult to get a set. They are no longer being produced. A few sets may be sitting at a dealer somewhere. It's going to take some digging to find them. Good Luck

I personally would spend a few bucks for the DEX-COOL 50/50. Not sure when the last time your coolant/anti-freeze was changed. For your 06 with DEX-COOL you should be flushing and changing your coolant/anti-freeze in 2011 anyway. 5 years or 150,000 mi.
If you do want to change over to standard glycol based coolent/anti-freeze then your entire system should be flushed twice and then filled with the glycol based coolent/anti-freeze. Change glycol based every 3 years or 40,000 miles. See you are not saving anything by changing to glycol based coolant/anti-freeze. Add up the flushes, and shorter intervals of change and you are actually spending more $.
Directly from the manufacturer of DEX-COOL:
CONTAMINATION:
Mixing conventional green coolant with DEX-COOL® will degrade the service interval from
5yrs./150,000 miles to 2yrs./30,000 miles (50,000 km) if left in the contaminated condition. If contamination occurs, the cooling system must be flushed twice immediately and re-filled with a 50/50 mixture of DEX-COOL® and clean water in order to preserve the enhanced properties and extended service interval of DEX-COOL®.

Be careful if buying a used or take off marker light kit.
The installation requires you to drill 3 holes in the roof and install some type of threaded rivet which becomes a permanant part of the install.
Those rivets are left behind if you remove the marker lights and unless someone has gone out and found a set of those rivets to include in the sale then you are going to be searching for them yourself. I don't know how readily available they are, so beware.
