Default New owner '06 h3 base

First of all thanks to those of you who have contributed to the forum, I bought this truck on a whim when it came in on trade at the Toyota dealership I work at. I did the Used car inspection on it and fell in love with it while checking it over. It has 60k on the clock but was pretty much spotless inside and out.

It was bone stock, base with original 265 GY's still on it, DVD headrests, and the chrome louvers on the hood w/handles.

After purchase I started searching the net and stumbled across you guys. I spent a few hours searching and reading up.

First thing I did was get a set of 5100 Bilstiens and readjusted the torsions. I found a used grill guard on craigslist for it, Pulled the chrome louvers off. I have been going back and forth on tires and possibly aftermarket wheels, I finally gave up on wheels since the price jump for tires when you go 17-18" is pretty drastic. So last week I finally pulled the trigger and ordered some tires. I got Toyo M/T's 305's. I love them but they are heavy and are more of a hit on the performace than I thought they would be. They ride nice and are pretty quiet for what they are though. I also got some overlay decals off ebay and installed them so I figured I show it off a bit now:

so now I am researching "performance" mods to help compensate the tires. I did just get and install a volant cai, I was planning on the airdoc, only reason I did not go with it was I was not too happy with the lid on my stock airbox, I found a volant with filter (the 2006 system does eliminate the resinator) for basically what it would cost for an airdoc and aftermarket filter. Currently it just makes alot of noise as I have not installed anything else.

I plan on a port/polished TB, e fan kit, exhaust, and a PCM for less upgrade

watching for good deal on an exhaust right now, I am going to contact that guy on the colorado/caynon forums that advertises the TB's and offers an efan kit as well. Anyone have any experince with his kits? I don't know if his fan kit is better/worse than the PCM for less one. I would like to get everything lined up before I get the reprogram.

I installed heavy 35 inch tires, so I'm also exploring possible performance upgrades for my 3.5. I went with a GM touring exhaust that I got off of eBay. If you do a search on 2006 exhaust questions you will get a lot of information. The eBay seller was Frank Kent motor company. AirDoc's intake for me. I went with a shift pattern of 3 in my PCM tune. It holds the shift point much higher into the RPM range. I've looked into the eFan. On the 2006, there is no need to adjust anything on the PCM as they require a thermostat be installed. Researched the ported throttle body, which I believe I'll be ordering. Not hearing performance gains as much as quicker responce times from the drive by wire system. There is at lease one member of this forum that has installed one. I've also been looking into a header, but from what I've read, there can be issues with throwing codes. The Chevy guys have dyno them in the range of freeing up 30 HP. They are a bit expensive $800 + to $1,300 range. To much for me knowing it is not a simple bolt on. There is also a coil spring delete (copper rod) the Chevy guys are using. Better seat of the pants feel, with the ability to get rid of the engine shake. No sign of HP gain that I can tell.

In short, intake, exhaust, eFan, ported throttle body & PCM upgrade help the seat of the pants feel, but the header seems to be the ticket if anyone can figure out how to tune them correctly on the H3. I have not come across anything else, but if you do, let me know. I follow the 355 forum and I'm always looking for something that could help without sacrificing drivability.

Nice purchase. It's tough not to like the 3 if you spend any time with one. Sounds like a great list of mods. I do not have an e-fan installed but there was a Hummer driver that installed one in the last year and posted a video. His complaint was it sounded like a leaf blower and after watching the video it definitely did. Link below isn't the one I'm thinking of but you can hear it quickly. I think mechanically it is a great mod adn I am not knocking it just trying to pass info along.

I've been running a PCMforless Efan conversion for more than a year. Loud = moving lots of air!

the stock fan works great for cooling, quiet, so is the electric moving too much air?,wasting power?. why should it need to be noisy if the stock fan isnt?

The performance reason is to remove weight and resistance from the front of the motor to free up existing HP. Functionally there is nothing wrong with the stock fan. Racers remove as many of the belt drivern accessories as possible to get free HP. They move them over to the electrical system and even go as far as switching them off during a run.

As for noise, the fact that you now have an electric motor spinning a fan blade mounted closer to the flat radiator surface creates additional noise. It is a simple trade off. Noise for power gains.

If you are not looking for more power, don't use the eFan...

thanks for all the replies. I was perusing ebay tonight looking to see if frank kent had re listed the performance exhaust (been watching them to try and get the best price) and I noticed a brand new magnaflow for an unbelievably low price. Even with shipping was a steal! But even better than that I realized that it was a shop right here in town. Even better than that was that shop is owned by an old neighbor of mine!!!!!

So I picked up the phone and called him, I am now the proud owner of a brand new magnaflow system For $340 bucks!! I was considering calling a guy advertising a NIB magnaflow down in Miami area for $425 but I really was not wanting to make the 3 hour drive down there so this just made my day! hopefully I can get with him in the next day or two so I can get the truck on the lift and slap it on by the weekend.

Anyway, heres some question for you guys with the PCM tunes, It looks like you kinda need to have them reprogram if your going to install an efan. Lets say I don't get the fan at the same time, is that going to be a problem?

also for doc, Is that fan noise really prominent in the vehicle (windows up radio on a/c going etc..) Its always hot down here and I always have the air on so its going to be running most of the time.

I did see where they talk about the thermostats and have some listed (not for the I5) I of course have already experienced the low coolant temp code and replaced the thermostat and It looks like your limited to that oddball housing thermo assy, is there any t-stats that run cooler than stock available?

It definitely needs a shift upgrade, Dunno how high I should go on their scale, don't want to go overboard

Octane, I always put the cheap stuff in everything, out of habit more than anything. around here its listed as 87, midgrade is 89 I think, and top o the line is like 93 IIRC. Of course I would like to remain on the low side, but if one of the higher ups will make a good difference I could change my ways.

sorry for all the questions, I was going through the questionnaire they want you fill out for the reprogram and was not feeling to confident I am going to make the right decisions
