Mystery noise, power steering pump?
Hey guys
Rig has held up well so far. But yesterday, I noticed an odd noise.
When driving and turning left, I hear a whiny sound coming from what sounds like near the passengers side tire.
The sound doesn't occur when turning right, only when turning left.
The sound does not occur when the vehicle is stopped and I turn the wheel left or right; it only occurs while in motion.
I checked the power steering fluid and it's full. Could it be the pump itself?
Rig has 130k on her.
Wanted to see what you guys think. Thanks in advance!

Hey 2005h2- i actually heard this (or similar) sound coming from mine. It just started saturday as far as i can tell. Mine also happens when turning left. I drove all through my neighborhood trying to replicate it. At first i thought it was the tires making the sound. I started thinking it was the ps pump. I checked fluid and it is fine. I had my idler and pitman arms replaced last year. I know i heard it and my wife did too. I made her ride around with me to verify i wasnt hearing things. Im wondering if it is a wheel bearing issue. I dont know how to check them other than have the shop look when they rotate my tires.
Between the rattles and the odd noises these old trucks make- that whining sound perked my ears. Good luck and hope we find what it is.

Nospoon- that is what i believe the issue is. Makes the most sense.
Anyone know how hard they are to replace myself? Or should i have a shop do the work? 13 years of dirt, rust and grime might be better for someone else to deal with! Lol

This video is a good example if you only plan to replace the half shafts.
Good Luck!
Hey 2005h2- just to provide some feedback on my similar issue... wheel bearings. My driver side was shot and the passenger side wasnt far behind. Having them replaced today. Passenger side tire had about 1” play in the tire and drivers side wheel should have fallen off by now lol. At least this is getting fixed and i shouldnt have to worry about it anymore.
