I have a 1997 H1 6.5L Turbo Diesel. One of her past problems included shutting off randomly and then starting right back up. Was at random times and would do it up to 10 times in a 5 mile trip. Turns out it was the fuel pump, it was replaced and never had any problems since...

Fast forward 1,000 miles later.. Or less

So on to last night... I was driving home, and engine just cut off. I lost all brakes, steering, but not lights. The truck cranks and cranks, but just won't turn over....

Not sure if the fuel pump was used or new, but in my experience only something like this is fuel related.... Any ideas gentleman? What to try?

 

I had same problem a couple of years ago with my 1997-1/2 HI Turbo Diesel.

Sounds like you need to move the- forgot the name of the device it's called a PMD, or something like that- away from the top of the engine where it heats up and cuts off the diesel flow. You can remount it over the battery or near the firewall- I did the latter - and never had another problem.

 

Could be a fuel delivery issue or PMD. Recheck the relays to the lift pump. If it has power check to make sure it is pumping fuel. Will the truck start after it has cooled down?
