Military surplus H1. Good deal or not a good idea?
This was a big discussion a while back when a bunch went to auction. The conclusion was they are not meant for highway use which means in most states you cannot register them to make them legal to drive.
That may have changed but I haven't hear anything since.

They now come with the required forms to get a title and fine for on road use after you register. I just can't run the bead locks in VA.
I know several people that have had really good experiences and have heard a few horror stories. Ian is trying to sell a Humvee that someone bought thinking it was a running vehicle. Turns out it needs an engine. Many places will allow them to be registered for on road use. Understand that these are very basic, bare bones vehicles. Many parts are relatively easy to get still. Not sure how long that will be the case but there are still something like 100,000 Humvees in military service.
A hmmwv is not a luxury vehicle, its not a race car,its not a comfortable ride (stock),the seats suck (i have more comfortable lawn chairs). Ut has no a/c, its not somthing that will impress girls, its not good on narrow freeways in construction zones. (Sometimes I will have the brail driving road bumps hitting tires on both sides. It makes your teeth want to fall out.) not good at passing a fuel station. Not a incognito vehicle. Not a good vehicle to shop at whole foods with as it will not fit in the parking lot. Cant pull much weight with out over heating. A 6.2 with a 3 speed will only want to go about 55 max! ( the 6.5 is better!). The parts are very similar to h1 but the hmmwv is 24 volt, so if your battery's die its a pain to get it jumped and the electrical parta are different.
But, If you buy it for what it is you will love it! Completely awesome off-road & able to be modified with the same steering& suspension upgrades as a H1. Big Dog Offroad has a custom air bag suspension kits with a few options. If you have a nice h1 (or not) and need a bang around truck to tear up its the best deel you will get on a budget. You can roll the thing sideways down a hill and probably drive it away. Upgrading the seat belts is suggested. And the side mirrors are not $800 each.
A bit of advice- they have all sat in a hot field for years and will need everything rubber.

Sounds perfect. Just what I'm looking for. Found a very nice one that runs great and stops!! Still Planning on many mods. Seats and seatbelts are first on the list.
