Default looking to buy my firat H3. need some input!

Hello,

My local dealer has a used 2007 H3 black leather interior with 30k miles on it for $22k. I have never really done much research on H3s but it rides real nice. Do they have any known problems or anything I need to look at while i test drive it overnight? I once heard they no longer make hummers anymore but I saw a 2010...so I'm guessing that's a rumor? Thanks guys I appreciate your input.

That's a good year, bigger motor and later on in the year they moved the arm rest controls to a more reasonable position than under your elbow. Check the radiator (metal fins w/ plastic tanks) for cracks in the plastic or you're looking at about $800 to fix it. Check and see that the spare is the same size as the other 4 tires (if the tires aren't OEM) and if it has a sunroof then make sure you clean out the drain line once it's yours so the sunroof doesn't leak on you. Other than that I can't think of anything out of the ordinary for the 07 and later H3's.

You heard right, 2010 was the last year for the Hummer line.

Thank you for the reply. With 2010 being the last year of production, will parts be harder and harder to come across? I can see this being a possible drawback.

it won't be that bad. most of the suspension parts are half ton chevy truck, and motors are half ton chevy or colorado. that is one of the great things about GM is they make so much stuff that is compatible that you can find parts pretty easily

All I can say is don't rush into buying one. Find the right one for you. It took me about 6 months and numerous test drives to find the right Alpha for me, and I ended up flying to a different state to purchase one and driving her back. Oh, do a Carfax also. They don't have complete info, but it seemed to help me in trying to decipher a vehicle's history.

I'm looking at a second H3 so my wife will quit trying to run off with mine. The prices of H3's have really jumped in the past 7-8 months! Good for my 07, not so good for buying another for the wife. Still, I am trying to hold out for another adventure package and wish I could afford a V8. However, they're ALL good choices.

rsc - this souds familiar. I bought 2 brand new in 2007, went in just to get one for myself, was in with the sales manager finalizing the number and my wife started up a conversation that went about like this...

wife: "So do you have any others with leather...and navigation?"
manager: "Let me check. (looks on the computer). I have a black one with black leather and navigation. It has the chrome package as well."
wife: "How much for that one?"
manager: "$40,000"
wife: "we will take that one too"

so I walked out with two 2007 black H3's with black leather interior. I have since sold mine and we only have hers now...and I can't wait to get my hands back on it when she is done driving it. 1 year 8 months and it will be my toy!!

Parts, per Federal law have to be available for ten years past the last model used on, so by reasoning, you should be safe up to 2020 for anything but the 2006 I-5 engine.

In addition, since the Colorado/Canyon are still be produced, the engine/trans are the same (different exhausts/intakes etc.) but the engine are basically the same, so that adds time to the federal mandate.

Axles and TC are unique to the H3/H3T. But I believe they are used by other manufactures. Same with the brake system. Other suspension parts are pretty much common to the GM line of 1/2 ton trucks (as someone mentioned earlier).

Interior parts are pretty unique to H3s. BCM is totally unique to the H3, most other computers are common across other platforms. Electric brake system is unique to H3s, and a similar one was used on 08 and later H2s.

But, as more H3s get wrecked, parts will become available at junk yards.

Best thing to do with any vehicle that is still under warranty, get the dealer to run a complete service history (for warranty related repairs; not any good for non GM related work). Any GM dealer service department can run they history in about three minutes.

As for the sunroof drains. I would have the dealer check them before purchase. Have them take a hose and run water over the sunroof for a few minutes. You should see water coming out behind the front wheels, and in front of the rear wheels. If not, one of more is plugged. Then have the dealer fix it.

Sounds like my wife... Which is why I don't want to take her car shopping anymore. When we bought her I had talked them down to what I considered a good deal but not a great one. It met my minimum requirements, but didn't have leather and possibly other options I thought she would be more happy with. She thought I was ready to leave (I was actually trying to get them down a bit more and I was confident I could get them down another $500-$1000 but not quite done dealing) when she jumped in and said we'll take it.

Not that I haven't made mistakes in the past, when I bought my H3 I didn't verify what they meant by "certified" by GM.. Turns out it's not GM certified, it's just certified by a local GM dealership with an inferior warranty (still get the 5/100 from GM). Love the H3, but I wouldn't have paid what I did had I known it was not GM certified. In fact, at 55k miles for a non-GM certified vehicle I may have skipped it completely.
