In the 60's we had cannister filters which had to be cleaned out and reinstalled. Then came the spin on and from time to time someone comes up with the OLD idea renewed with a twist. You probably had heard of the toilet paper refill as well right?
Probably in my opionion is this system which is far better:

 

Takes up a lot of real estate under the hood.
