Default License Plate Light

I temporarily removed my spare tire and swing away tire carrier so that I can open my rear door when towing my trailer. I relocated my license plate to the rear door and figured the license plate lights in the door would work, but they don't. Anyone know if there's a trick to make them work?

When I changed my '07 exterior spare tire carrier to the interior type, that license plate holder on the rear door had no lights on it at all. I plan on using the LED strip and tap into the top rear clearance lights for power.

I plan on removing my tire carrier tomorrow as I'm getting a gobi rack with spare carrier... I also noticed there was no lights in the panel I plan on putting my plate...guess I'm gonna have to bite into the Clarence lights....

When i changed mine out the actual factory connector is behind the right taillight area up inside the bumper. To wire to that I would have to run wire all the way up the door, through the wire loom of the hatch, feed it over to the right side and back down and in behind the bumper and solder the wires to the OEM connector. To me, it just seemed easier to tap into the the red clearance lights at the top of the hatch, they have the same voltage and circut as the licence plate wire had.
I just need to make enough time to take off the panel where the plate goes and add my LED strip along the top underside of it.

I'm gonna just jump into the Clarence lights...probably this week since I picked up the Gobi rack today.

It worked out great! Drill a hols where plate light wires go in...remove rear hatch panel... Rear panel removes with 1 screw &. 2 push pins...the rest is just push in clips..remove panel & you have access to cab lights. Splice into ona & you have a plate light that is on
anyti e your clearance lights are on.
