Talking 19.6 MPG on a 2003 H2

I just joined this forum today. I have been studying hydrogen technology for years and I have returned to college to complete my engineering degree. I already have a math degree. Today, 9/11/2013 my team completed our first test on a hydrogen kit we purchased from HHOkitsdirect.com and installed it on a '03 H2 111,000 miles. We weren't overly impressed with the kit. It was supposed to take 4-6 hours. We just completed 5+ weeks. We have made numerous modifications to programming ECM and MAF sensors. I had the help of 3 engineers (one at GM in Detroit) and a GM Certified Master Mechanic who owns 2 H2's and has worked on hydrogen before as well as being an expert on all things Hummer. We are not here to blow smoke. We are extremely serious and we want to obtain and share information. Today, we ran our first preliminary test totalling 567 miles and getting 19.6 MPG. No ECM or MAF problems, warning lights or failures. We are in Denver, CO. so you must adjust as you lose 3% of BHP/RWHP per every 1000' of rise in elevation. (basically, we start at a 15% loss across the board) We have fully documented our progress and hope to upload a profession and scientific YouTube video soon. We will be tracking this vehicle closely for 1 year, uploading our log of information on every fill up and/or failure or issue.

My question is this: Has anyone else here ever done a conversion like this? If so, let's talk. In the mean time, good luck to everyone and enjoy your Hummers. I'll keep you posted.

Rick

I have not heard of anyone else doing this. Keep us posted. Sounds like the kit needs more work before being market ready.

I'm in the Albuquerque, Nm region. Our density varies daily from 5500 feet to just over 9000 feet. Which results in an average power loss of 16% to 24%.
I wonder how that hydrogen conversion would work with a supercharger. I don't know anything about using hydrogen as a fuel yet. Was there a power increase with using hydrogen?

Default miles per $

when you do major mods or go to exotic fuels you need to move to mpd,
miles per dollar.
a friend did that with hi/lo octane tests.
you could get 40 mp? on hydrogen and be meaningless.
in out life time and our kids', gas will be top mp$.
and, there is zero forseeable shortage of oil in the next 100 years.
we need cheaper gas!! work on that.

Well, we have some follow up on the 03 Hummer H2 that we installed a HHO kit on. In a nutshell, the chip we ordered didn't work very long. The system continued to make the required about of hydrogen, but it set the sensor off and gave us a check engine light. Thus failing the test. We have ordered a variable unit from another company. Here is what I ordered. We installed the Airaid intake system to make room for the HHO kit. It's sounds real throaty. The performance went up as expected as well. We anticipated an 1-1.5 MPG increase and we factor this out.

I have not installed it yet, but our GM Master Mechanic and our electrical engineer seem very upbeat about it. Our client will return the vehicle the week of Oct 11th, 2013. I'll keep you posted.-R

Yes, there was a power increase. The "seat of the pants" feeling was most prominent when accelerating from 50-60 mph to passing speed of 70-80 mph. Before, we'd have to "get in it" and mash the pedal down. Now, there is more acceleration without having to push so hard. (hydrogen is 8X more explosive that gas). I asked our GM Master Mechanic about your blower. He said that it should work fine, but put the disclaimer in that the blower is stressing the engine and it wasn't designed to do that, yadda yadda.

Just made a trip to SoCal. I drafted a semi for a brief period. I got almost 17 mpg doing that. The fill up calculated to 16.8 Mpg. Since i was on the 40, the truck speed limit was also 75 mph, so it wasn't as if i was going slow drafting the semi. I was pretty stoked about that. Otherwise, I was getting about 14.6 Mpg on my average fill up. The dash display seemed to be off a bit though.

And the only change I did was I added a cherry bomb cat back exhaust. I haven't put it on the dyno to see if the exhaust added any power. It sounds better if nothing else.
